Organization Mission

The Best Practices Policy Project (BPPP) is dedicated to supporting organizations and advocates working with sex workers, people in the sex trade and related communities in the United States. We produce materials for policy environments, address research and academic concerns and provide organizations and advocates with technical assistance. Everything that we do is guided by principles that protect the rights of people who engage in commercial sex in all its forms.

BPPP is a member of the US Human Rights Network, the Network of Sex Work Projects and the Association for Women’s Rights in Development.

What is the goal of the BPPP website?

This website is a tool to help people who want to make the US a better place for sex workers, people in the sex trade and communities that are affected by anti-prostitution policies. The resources on this site support organizing efforts and assist activists to learn and share about key issues. Mainstream reporting on sex worker issues and policy can be difficult to interpret so we regularly update our media review page and provide news analysis from the BPPP perspective. We provide fact sheets on what constitutes best practices and provide practical guides on how to make advocacy and organizing more accountable to a wide-range of sex workers, people in the sex trade and related communities.

Context

The newsletter and magazine serve as platforms to share our ongoing initiatives, organizing efforts, and opportunities to remain engaged with sex worker- and LGBTQ+ led work across policy advocacy, mutual aid, creative initiatives, and international advocacy.

At present, communities around the world are experiencing heightened instability and human rights challenges that disproportionately affect migrants, LGBTQ+ persons, sex workers, persons with disabilities, as well as Black, Indigenous, and other people of colour.

In this context, we are seeking an online volunteer to provide editorial support for our newsletter and magazine.

Key Responsibilities

We are looking for one online volunteer to support our communications effort though article writing.
The volunteer is expected to edit and proofread articles which go into our monthly magazine and news letter. The articles will be drafted by organization staff.
The Newsletter is about about 3 to 3 pages, while the magazine is up to 10 pages.

All articles will be received through senior staff.

For check-ins and also to understand our work, the online volunteer can attend some staff meetings every other week, the agenda will be planned to accommodate their input.

They also need to attend bi-weekly coalition meetings to check if colleagues have articles to contributions and take note of them.

Additional Information
Enter materials into Mailchimp template (creation of Newsletter) – up 12 hours (4 hours per newsletter)
Send first draft of email to Co-Eds with accompanying text to Co-eds with deadline – 1 hour
Incorporate any changes – up to 3 hours (1 hour per Newsletter)
Write up dot points – 1 hour (optional)

Required Skills and Experience

Reporting or copying editing, strong editorial judgement exceptional writing/editing,proficiency in digital content.
Editorial expertise- Expert level writing editing and proofreading
Digital proficiency- Strong understanding of digital publishing tools and social media integration
Operational skills- Strong organizational skills multitasking abilities and attention to details
