University of Adelaide Research Scholarship – Investigating neuronal oscillations and motor function in older adults

The PhD Scholarship “Investigating neuronal oscillations and motor function in older adults” is fully funded by the University of Adelaide to support a full-time PhD student who is commencing research in the field of Neuroscience.

By implementing a novel, multimodal approach involving cutting edge non-invasive brain stimulation and imaging, this project will characterise the causal role of brain oscillations in the ability of older adults to learn new motor skills.  Expected outcomes include a critical understanding of the basic neural mechanisms that contribute to altered motor function during healthy ageing.  These outcomes will provide significant benefits, including important neurophysiological insight that is required to develop targeted interventions aimed at improving movement in older adults.

The successful applicant will require a First Class Honours or Masters degree in a related field. Experience with non-invasive brain stimulation (e.g., TMS, tACS) and imaging (e.g., EEG), in addition to programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, python), will be extremely beneficial.

Eligibility: Applicants must be Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia, NZ citizens or international students who are acceptable as candidates for a PhD degree at the University of Adelaide.  The successful applicant must be available to commence study within Semester 1, 2023.

Stipend: The scholarship will be for 3.5 years and has a stipend of $29,863 (2023 rate) per annum. It is likely to be tax exempt, subject to Taxation Office approval.  Details of any terms and/or benefits can be found in the Conditions of Award .
