Position Summary
The Eghtesady Research Laboratory conducts basic and clinical research to explore the causes of congenital heart diseases. We are conducting studies to test this hypothesis by analyzing specimens from women with pregnancies affected by CHD. Our translational research interests encompass many areas of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery such as transfusion, transplant, and by-pass. The candidate will independently perform research studies, experiments, and assays with a specialized focus of phage immunoprecipitation-coupled sequencing technology. The selected candidate may participate and or present on the research developed, or the established work of those within the department.

Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs complex analyses, experiments, and project work according to research protocols and under general direction of the PI. Able to explain methods and procedures to other technicians. As examples among many, experiments involve techniques such cloning, nucleic acid extraction, PCR, sequencing library preparation, tissue sectioning and immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, viral plaque assays, and other immunological assays.
  • Plans, develops, organizes research results and findings. Monitors data to ensure consistent quality. May prepare presentation material and conduct literature searches related to research projects. May perform preliminary statistical analysis of data.
  • Organizes and maintains required documentation on lab and/or specimen conditions and can develop and summarize information into usable formats or presentations to the PI/Department. Assures compliance with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions. Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
  • Solves practical problems relating to difficulty with equipment or test subjects. Suggests technical/ procedural improvements in various methods. May develop and optimize experimental procedures and protocols. Provides high level troubleshooting to advance process or lab procedures.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain complete and organized records and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability and knowledge of computer software and lab equipment including statistical software, spreadsheets, and lab management systems.
  • Ability to work in a lab research environment.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree with two years of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling seven years.

R08-H

Salary Range
$17.86 – $30.39 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one’s qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
