Under the general direction of the Facilities Manager, the Sculpture Lab, Woodshop, Metal & Machine Shop Technician Supervisor is responsible for the management, supervision, operation, maintenance and development of the Department of Art Sculpture, Woodshop, Metal and Machine Shop facilities equipment and related shops work spaces and laboratories. Secondarily, this position oversees the maintenance of Studio Art classrooms, graduate studios and common areas. Prepares facilities with necessary supplies and materials for course instruction and special projects. Participates in the technical and safety supervision and training of undergraduate and graduate students, staff and faculty researchers in the use of the departmental mechanical shops, equipment, tools and fabrication techniques. Conducts workshops and demonstrations on specialized techniques (i.e. woodworking, metal fabrication and machining, light construction and installation, specialty molding making, 3D-digital printing, current materials and fabrication techniques in developing areas of contemporary art production.) Designs and fabricates fixtures and equipment, to execute finished works, and installations of student and faculty research projects. Serves as project manager for departmental shop space maintenance, renovations and new construction. Maintains regular email and in person communication with faculty and staff, and attends area meetings. Responsible for the laboratory equipment inventory and materials records, shared budget documents and purchasing for the area. Maintains and updates shared web based calendars, documents, and spreadsheets. Complies with and educates shop and lab users on the safety standards regarding general lab use and safe use of materials and equipment.

Required:
 
1-2 years of related experience.
Bachelors Degree or higher.
Experience managing financial resources for construction/facilities/corporate operations. Occasional ability to work evenings and/or weekends. Journeyman level skills and experience relating to the use and maintenance of carpentry and metal shops working equipment, paint, and other materials used in fabrication; using shop power equipment and hand held tools (e.g., sanders, saws, benders, drill presses, rollers, buffers, welders, lathes, sandblasting cabinet, punch, routers, vacuum-former, jointer, planer, 3D printers), maintenance of gas and electric kilns, glaze inventory. Strong interpersonal skills including sensitivity, tact and diplomacy to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff. Ability to make oral presentations to teach small groups of students and faculty on safety procedures and proper use of studio equipment and facilities. Ability to supervise students to insure the safe and proper use of equipment, machinery tools, materials and processes used in the studio art studios of sculpture, ceramics, and painting. This supervision includes the supervision of student-performed clean-up and maintenance of studios. Demonstrated ability to uphold strict safety standards and Studio Art rules and guidelines Knowledge and ability to maintain, service and repair, or cause to be serviced and repaired by others, the tools, equipment and facilities in the studio art studios and common areas. Ability to perform effectively with frequent interruptions, fluctuating workloads and competing needs of studios and faculty. Working knowledge of all materials, chemicals, supplies, equipment, tools, services and resources necessary for the operation of wood, metal/machine shops and ceramics. Knowledge of management techniques and operation of electrical equipment used to cut wood, metal, ceramic or other construction/artistic materials. Ability and willingness to assert authority to maintain safety standards and procedures including a clean and safe work environment, as well as protect against improper and dangerous use of equipment and facilities. Demonstrated skill in supervising student staff, including delegating responsibility, establishing work schedules, verifying time sheets and evaluating work performance. Ability to train and supervise students and faculty on the use of all equipment, tools and Studio facilities. Ability to work in an environment that is occasionally dusty, smoky, toxic, uncomfortably hot and noisy. Specialty art fabrication skills, including but not limited to the knowledge of carpentry and machining principles to assist with design and fabrication projects.
