Job Description

The Design School at the Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts seeks a high-performing, positive and service oriented individual with excellent attention to detail to plan, schedule and coordinate student/faculty shop activities. Trains students/faculty in the safe and efficient use of shop facilities and equipment. Coordinates with faculty and students model construction process based on current semester syllabus. Recommends various types of materials based on the structural construction of prototype model. Works closely with students from the design stages of prototype fabrication intent. Evaluates student’s geometry files and sketches and recommends proper fabrication from hand tools, power tools, and conventional equipment up to CNC, 3D printing, or Laser digital equipment. Maintains and performs minor repairs and setups on shop equipment and tools. Reports equipment issues and makes new equipment recommendations to shop manager. Maintains shop clean and organized at all times.  This position reports to the Model and Prototype Shop Manager

Essential Duties

  • Operates a wide range of fabrication shop equipment
  • Works closely with Faculty and student on the semester’s syllabus
  • Trains students on the proper use of all shop equipment
  • Assists students in the safe operation of shop fabrication equipment and power and hand tools
  • Monitors students’ progress on model fabrication, assembling, and fastening Teaches and demonstrates model construction and assembly methodologies
  • Evaluates student’s geometry sketches/files and recommends proper fabrication process
  • Collaborates with systems support to dialogue between computer generated designs to hard model techniques and construction techniques.
  • Teaches students shop equipment usage best practices according to manufacturing specs
  • Ensures students work safely and efficiently while in shop facilities
  • Recommends various types of materials based on student prototype model design
  • Meets and advises students from the initial stages of model design intent
  • Certifies students in the use of the shop facilities
  • Schedules and coordinates student shop activities
  • Performs minor repairs shop equipment and tools
  • Performs CNC, 3D-Printing, and Laser-cutting machine running setups
  • Performs preventive/corrective maintenance on shop equipment and tools
  • Ensures shop equipment is always in optimum operating condition
  • Assists students on detailed projects applying safety practices or digital or manual equipment
  • Designs and develops simple jigs and holding fixtures to aid in the construction of scale models
  • Assists in the receiving, handling, and storage of fabrication materials
  • Maintains maintenance schedule and makes recommendations to shop manager
  • Ensures the shop is always clean and organized

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Business Administration, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical or Structural Engineering, Construction Management, Management or related field AND five years construction or maintenance experience which includes one year supervisory experience; OR, Nine years construction/maintenance experience which includes one year supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with woodworking equipment and tools skills including knowledge of types of wood and wood composites.
  • Model construction experience from small to large, including design-build projects.
  • Experience with welding and metal fabrication such as shearing, breaking, bending, drilling, cutting.
  • Experience in digital fabrication of models using CNC, 3D printing, Laser cutting/engraving equipment.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Ability to train students in safety procedures and shop use.
  • Experience in working with hand, electric, and pneumatic power tools.
  • Experience in maintaining supplies by ordering and/or picking up items as needed.
  • Ability to organize and set work load priorities for efficient use of students and faculty time.
  • Experience in multitasking several projects and maintain deadlines.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations in a professional manner and to complete work on time.
  • Ability to adapt to heavier workloads with the flux of semester projects.
  • Ability to monitor equipment maintenance schedule.
  • Ability to complete minor repairs and equipment tools replacement such as cutting blades, belts and disks
  • Ability to utilize university and department procedures for recommending and requesting equipment maintenance (repair and replacement) and/or updating equipment information database.
  • Ability to adapt to new policies and procedures mandated by the School and University.
  • Ability to monitor material supply and recommend material acquisition to School administration.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and integrate them into the facility.
  • Ability to maintain a standard first aid card, C.P.R. certification, and first aid kit including required supplies.
  • Knowledge of facility safety procedures.
  • Evidence of interpersonal skills for effective communication and working relationships with a diverse group of students and faculty.

Working Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use computer, traditional shop tools, and technology-based machines. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, push, pull and lift a minimum of 30 pounds. The employee is required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
  • Regular use of traditional Shop Machines including but not limited to: table saw, vertical bandsaw, scroll saw, drill press, metal and woodworking lathe, planar, joiner, disk and oscillating sanders, vertical mill, horizontal bandsaw, panel saw, miter saw, hydraulic metal step shear, metal rolling machine.
  • Regular use of electric power and hand tools including but not limited to: orbital sander, jigsaw, belt sander, disk grinder, router, biscuit machine, metal nibbler, and a variety of pneumatic tools
  • Regular use of technology-based machines including but not limited to: MultiCam 5’x5’ CNC Waterjet, Multicam 4’x8’ CNC Router, HAAS 18”x26” CNC Vertical Mill, Prusa and 3DRiser printing machines, Universal 18”x32” laser engraving/cutting machines.
  • Knowledge of programming and post-processing software such as MasterCam, ideaMaker, PrusaSlicer, and CAD/CAM such as Solidworks, Rhino, Autocad, Fusion 360, a plus.

Flexible work options (after 3 months of service with the Herberger Institute, contingent on the need of the Unit/School and performance)

  • Alternative work schedules can include four, 10-hour workdays in a workweek; a nine-day, 80-hour schedule over two workweeks for exempt employees only; and staggered start and stop times.
  • Hybrid work is an arrangement where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.
