Position Focus:
Reporting to the Director of Risk Management and Insurance, this position’s primary responsibility is to oversee and direct the resolution of the University’s property and casualty claims (excluding workers’ compensation claims), direct and coordinate the engineering and claims services provided by insurers and other service providers and the University wide response to same, manage the Office of Enterprise Risk Management’s Risk Management Information System, and provide support to the Director in the development, implementation and management of all operational risk management and risk financing program initiatives and solutions. This position requires flexibility to respond to after-hours issues. Please note that this is not remote position and is expected to be on campus 4 days per week.
Claims: Direct the handling and appropriate resolution of approximately 300 annual University wide property and liability claims. Provide direction, in conjunction with the Director, internal and outside counsel, outside claims. administrators, brokers and insurers, on the defense of claims, claims mitigation strategies and the resolution of any potential insurance coverage issues. Direct the flow of information between defense counsel and insurers, claims consultants and claims administrators and ensure quality claims handling and cost containment strategies are in place. Ensure sufficient financial reserves are established; Track claims expenditures and ensure proper recovery is received from insurers. Manage the RMIS (Risk Management Information Systems) needs of the department including ensuring the quality and accuracy of data and proper data mapping.
Risk Control: Direct and coordinate insurer and consultant engineering inspections, site visits and construction plan reviews; Act as a liaison between key University departments and the insurers on risk control recommendations and the development and implementation of university wide response to same. Analyze claims data to identify trends and opportunities to improve the University’s risk profile; Work with key University departments to develop and implement loss mitigation strategies. Respond to campus emergencies and large-scale property damage incidents 24/7. Serve on University’s Fleet Safety Committee. Serve on University’s Emergency Operations Team. Serve as an alternate on the University’s Joint Health and Safety Committee. Coordinate the administration of University’s alcohol awareness training course.
Insurance Program/Risk Management: In conjunction with the Director, support all aspects of the University’s risk financing program, including compilation and analysis of underwriting information for insurance renewals. Review university contracts and agreements for compliance with University insurance requirements; evaluate requests for amendments. Maintain schedule of worldwide property values for property insurance; advise broker and insurers of updates. Generate claims and related data for loss forecasting for use in insurance renewal submissions and actuarial analysis. Special Projects as directed by the Risk Manager.
Essential Duties
1. Directs, monitors, and assesses needs and directs the application of resources of an administrative University office dealing with one or more major functional areas. 2. Directs and implements solutions to problems that are routine to complex in nature and that affect multiple functional areas of responsibility. 3. Plans and/or participates in planning University activities on a long-term basis to comply with University goals and objectives. 4. Establishes and implements consistent university-wide policies in multiple functional areas of responsibility. 5. Ensures that University office policies and procedures are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. 6. Develops and monitors goals and objectives for managerial and professional staff in compliance with University strategies. 7. Directs a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in related field and seven years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Demonstrated experience with at least two of the following: casualty or property claims adjusting, property risk engineering, claims information systems, property or casualty lines of insurance.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Good analytical skills; ability to analyze data and present findings. Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of products.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills; ability to work collaboratively in a team-based setting; ability to work effectively with and motivate a diverse population; and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Strong project management, negotiation, problem solving and decision-making skills. Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Five+ years experience; Property claims experience; Property risk engineering experience; Property or casualty underwriting experience; Experience in higher education; Professional designations such as AIC, ALCM. CSM, CRM, ARM; Membership in professional organizations such as RIMS, URMIA, ACP, ASSP, NASP; Connecticut adjuster’s license
