Job Summary

The Associate Director of Fitness is responsible for developing and administering comprehensive fitness-based programs and services that meet the demands of the University community and promote the mission of the Center for Recreational Sports and Student Affairs. The Associate Director of Fitness will also be responsible for oversight of a student staff of approximately 40 student employees and the day-to-day operations of the Wiedman Fitness Center; a 16,000 square foot fitness facility. The Associate Director of Fitness will report directly to the Director of Center for Recreational Sports.

Oversee student employees

  • Supervise approximately 30 fitness center attendants
  • Supervise approximately 10 student personal trainers
  • Interview, hire, train, schedule, evaluate, mentor, and recognize student employees
  • Verify student employee hours in Kronos bi-weekly.
  • Conduct student employee meetings (group and one-on-one)
  • Implement and instruct in-service training, workshops, and certification opportunities for student staff and personal trainers
  • Maintain student certifications
  • Update student employee handbooks bi-annually

Manage the daily operations of the Wiedman Fitness Center and satellite fitness facilities

  • Coordinate equipment maintenance, repair, staffing, and cleaning schedule for a 16,000 square foot facility
  • Research vendor quality, service, and pricing options for ordering and purchasing of equipment
  • Develop and implement fitness equipment maintenance program (including daily cleaning, maintenance and repair) and annual/long-term equipment replacement plan
  • Establish, enforce and maintain fitness center policies, procedures and signage
  • Coordinate the annual maintenance of the Wiedman Fitness Center with University and external partners
  • Maintain and update necessary emergency procedures, safety practices and risk management processes in conjunction with center administration and Global Risk Management Services
  • Ensure that fitness facilities and equipment are accessible to all patrons
  • Maintain accurate capital inventory and equipment maintenance records
  • Coordinate and implement assessments of fitness facilities, program and services on an ongoing basis. Utilize assessments results and participant feedback to make strategic changes.

Develop, implement and oversee fitness-based services and programs

  • Oversee all aspects of fitness based services and programs/workshops including, but not limited to: personal training, fitness assessments, fitness center tours and fitness center basics
  • Develop and implement new programs and activities that serve students’ needs, fosters student learning, encourages and promotes diversity, and builds campus community, interest and pride
  • Collaborate with University partners on intersectional fitness, health, recreation, wellness and/or student engagement related programming initiatives
  • Serve as the advisor of the Weight Lifting Club
  • Report engagement data for fitness-based programming annually and as needed.

Maintain appropriate professional certifications

Other functions as assigned, including but not limited to division committee and taskforce participation and professional development. 

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Health Science, Recreation, or related field

Experience:

  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in fitness and wellness in a recreation or fitness facility.
  • Experience conducting personal training with a diverse clientele.

Certification, Professional License or Credential:

  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid, current certification in personal training from a nationally recognized fitness organization or willingness to obtain (ACE, ACSM, AFAA, NASM, NCSF, NETA, NSCA, etc)

Skills:

  • Strong knowledge in the area of personal training program development.
  • Have a firm understanding of current local and national fitness and well-being initiatives, programs and trends.
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and electronic communications skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse or multicultural audiences.
  • Ability to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships based on respect, empathy and honesty with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Ability to manage and maintain confidential and private information; uses confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, protects information appropriately.
  • Computer competence using software and enterprise systems appropriate for the complexities of the role and its functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exercise science background
  • Management experience working with students and professional staff in a university setting
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture, American Sign Language (ASL), or willingness to learn
  • Campus recreation experience preferred
