Job Summary:

The Web Designer will join the staff of the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
The Web Designer will be responsible for the web presence that will share work, knowledge, and passion related to sustainable agricultural systems at UW-Madison. This position will work closely with many members of the CALS community to create professional, high-impact web-based resources to enhance outreach solutions for stakeholders throughout the state. Successful applicants will be responsible for knowledgeably taking a project of any size and scope through conception to ideation to finished deliverable. In addition to expertise in web design and maintenance, the Designer will be expected to work with graphic design elements for printable materials that will be hosted on websites, such as PDF versions of reports and documents. An interest in and experience with agricultural systems is not required, but strongly desired.

Responsibilities: Develops and designs the user interface and overall user experience for websites and applications. May train staff and direct the work of others. Contributes to digital media strategic initiatives and serves as a subject matter expert regarding website design and layout.
  • 30% Develops and designs the overall navigation flow, layout of specific pages, and creation of individual graphic elements; ensures that all design elements, templates, and finished solutions work within a variety of browser types and screen settings along with the constraints set by development and design
  • 30% Provides design maintenance of websites and other electronic publications and applications
  • 10% Develops and implements strategic digital media initiatives, priorities, objectives, and best practices in collaboration with leadership and other functional work units
  • 5% Schedules work and/or supervises staff as needed
  • 20% Implements graphical and style standards for web sites
  • 5% Serves as a subject matter expert and unit liaison to other departments to design graphics and layouts

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor’s Degree
Journalism, marketing, communications, or related field

Qualifications:

Experience in communications, agriculture and/or food systems, English, science writing, or related field, preferred.

License/Certification:

Required
Drivers License – Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards

Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 50% – 100%
This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
