USFS Office/Lab and Location: A full time science application and communication opportunity is available with the US Forest Service (USFS), Rocky Mountain Research Station located in Missoula, Montana. The Forest Service and the Rocky Mountain Research Station continue to operate in a liberal telework status since the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, this opportunity could be conducted on site at the Missoula Fire Sciences Lab but could also be conducted remotely. If remote, the participant will be closely integrated with other Fire Sciences Lab staff members through virtual meeting and collaboration software.

Research Project: This specific opportunity is with the Fire Modeling Institute (FMI) at the Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory. FMI is a joint effort between the Fire, Fuel, and Smoke Science Program (FFS) of the Rocky Mountain Research Station and Washington Office Fire and Aviation Management (FAM). It is a center of expertise that supports fire and fuels management planning, resource management, and science implementation locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

This person selected for this opportunity will help to develop engaging and interactive web-based content about FMI projects and other projects in the Fire, Fuel, and Smoke Science (FFS) Program of RMRS. Simple and effective visualization of data can be a very powerful way to share the work we do in FMI with professionals in the fire and land management communities, leadership in the Forest Service and other agencies, and the public.

Learning Objectives: This participant will help us to tell the story of what we do at FMI and in the FFS Program. They will assist with our Visual Information Specialist, FMI staff, and scientists in the FFS program. As such, it will be an interesting opportunity to learn about and engage in the work of FMI and the FFS program while helping to communicate about the research we do.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of USFS and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. The current annual stipend amount for this opportunity is $54,000.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor’s or master’s degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion by June 30, 2023. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

– Proficiency in the ESRI suite of GIS software (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, etc.) and familiarity with ESRI’s ArcGIS Online platform
– Experience creating web maps and web applications in the ArcGIS Online platform.
– Experience using GIS in a natural resource management context.
– Good writing skills, particularly with translating scientific information into plan English for non-technical and non-scientific audiences.
– Experience with cartographic design and data visualization.
– Experience with general web content creation, content management systems, and design would be a plus.
– Curiosity to learn about wildfire science and management.
