Teaching Assistant Professor in Literature with an Emphasis on Experiential Learning (Literature Program, English Department)

The University of Pittsburgh English Department invites applications for the position of Teaching Assistant Professor to take a leadership role in our growing beyond-the-classroom and experiential learning curriculum. The Teaching Assistant Professorship is a full-time renewable position for an initial term of three years with the opportunity for renewal and promotion. The position will begin on September 1, 2023.

This is a position within the Literature program open to any specialization, although the ideal candidate will demonstrate an ability to teach a broad range of literature, genres, and topics. The successful candidate will also have experience: in creating inter-community learning partnerships with organizations and institutions both within and beyond the university (ideally with those that represent typically underrepresented communities and knowledge); teaching literary texts in relationship to larger contestations of cultural value; and building innovative experiences and projects in which students learn and employ an expanded set of creative-critical skills and techniques.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in English, Literature, or a related field by the time of appointment (September 1, 2023). This position comes with a 3/3 teaching load, with the expectation of service to the Literature program and English Department. Service may include assessment, course development support, and faculty workshops.

• A teaching portfolio that includes sample syllabi for two courses with an emphasis on involving experiential learning, critical making, and engagement with material culture and at least two assignments or sequences (other teaching materials from these classes, such as in-class workshops practices, are welcome)
• Student surveys for three classes
• 3 confidential letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the candidate’s teaching
