The Student Residences Scholarship was established with the aim of helping those students who are most in need who are residing within Student Living accommodation.

These scholarships support students who are academically capable but managing studies alongside educational disadvantages such as:

• Carer responsibilities
• English language difficulty
• Financial hardship
• Long term medical condition/ disability or ongoing effects of abuse
• Regional or remote disadvantage
• Sole parent responsibilities
• Additional attributes such as Indigenous Australian or having Refugee status.

It is hoped that this scholarship will provide much needed support for students living in Residential Colleges to continue to overcome disadvantage and maintain their achievements. A minimum of one scholarship will be made available to a resident of Edwards Hall.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

• Be enrolled in any year of an undergraduate program with the University of Newcastle.
• Be enrolled full-time.
• Be residing in on-campus accommodation with Student Living and remain a resident for the duration of the year of scholarship award.
• Demonstrate educational disadvantage such as carer, sole parent, financial hardship, English language difficulty, long term medical condition/disability or effects of abuse, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Out of Home Care, Refugee, or Geographic.
• Demonstrate academic progress either by the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent required for entry for commencing students, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 for continuing students.
• Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.

Required Documentation

If documentation is not provided your application will not be processed. Please have all required documents available for upload as PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, or JPG files prior to completing the online application process.

• A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.

• You may be required to provide documents to support your educational disadvantage claims. These will be identified when you apply based on your individual application responses.

Benefit

The scholarship provides a total benefit of $4000, to be paid as a lump sum. Payment will be after semester one census date, usually in April.

Selection

Selection is based on assessment of the scholarship application. The selection committee will aim to make scholarship offers to students who are assessed as being most in need of support, however will need to give consideration of distribution of awards to the different Colleges. This includes a minimum of one scholarship being offered to a resident of Edwards Hall, in keeping with the funding arrangement.

Selection will be made by the relevant Selection Committee which will consist of a minimum of three members chosen by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) or PVC.

All applicants notified of an outcome via email. This will usually occur within 6 weeks of the scholarship close date.

For applicants not receiving an offer, this does not mean you have been assessed as ineligible. The number of applications often far exceeds the number of scholarships available so it may mean that other applicants have been assessed as being in greater need of support at this time. Do not let an unsuccessful outcome deter you from applying for other scholarships and reapplying every year you study.
