The Campus Safety Service consists of the Campus Safety Special Constables, Tri-Campus Communication Centre, Building Patrol and Security Systems and Services. The Campus Safety Services provides a presence on campus through the use of uniformed mobile, foot and bicycle patrols. Campus Safety is responsible for the protection and safety of students, staff and visitors to the University.

The delivery model is based on a community safety philosophy which encourages an interactive partnership between Campus Safety and members of the community to facilitate a team approach to safety and security. The Campus Safety Service strives to promote inclusivity, inspiration and excellence in partnership with students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Your opportunity:

As a Campus Safety civilian member, working with a team of both sworn and civilian professionals and underthe general direction of the Assistant Director, you will build the University of Toronto St. George Campus capacity to identify and support students, staff and faculty that may be or are deemed to be in crisis or at risk.

As a key Campus Safety representative, you will be responsible for responding to Mental Health related Calls for Service with Special Constables, Case Consultation, Educational Outreach to Campus Safety personnel, Students, Staff and Faculty and collaborating with community partners including the Office of Safety & High Risk, Community Safety Office, Health and Wellness, Human Resources and the Sexual Violence Prevention and Support Centre.

Responding to calls for service, many of these incidents will be highly complicated that involve academic difficulties, mental health concerns, substance abuse, issues of trauma, including sexual violence, family problems, and involvement with Student Codes of Conduct, and in some cases the criminal justice system.
Some keyresponsibilities of your role will involve initial case coordination and management in situations of crisis, critical incidents and the participation in debriefing incidents with the Special Constables.

You will participate in the Tri-Campus Peer Support Group for Campus Safety members, develop, implement and maintaining initiatives designed to enhance resources for students, staff and faculty experiencing difficulties, including researching and disseminating appropriate models, strategies and best practices; developing educational materials and present at events. In addition, you will be an integral part of various campus and university committees that deal with student health, mental health, violence and safety.

While most of yourtime involving education and prevention work takes place during normal working hours, you may be required to be part of an on-call roster that responds, along with other University response staff, to emergencies, and crises that occur in the evenings, onweekends and during holidays. Some events and training sessions may take place outside of regular working hours.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Responding to crisis situations using a wide range of interpersonal and persuasive skills
  • Developing individualized long-term and short-term strategies to address the most complex situations for students in crisis or with chronic and complex problems
  • Providing initial clinical support and/or counselling to distressed students in crisis and making referrals to appropriate resources
  • Documenting much confidential and sensitive information regarding complex case files for distressed students
  • In collaboration with other university stakeholders, preparing high-risk case briefs used to determine outcomes for distressed students
  • Create, design and implement educational programs through seminars and/or workshops.
  • Serving as an expert resource to a group of professionals in the speciality
  • Participate in the Tri-Campus Peer Support Group for Campus Safety members.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or Doctorate Degree in clinical social work, counselling psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, or related field, or an acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience. Extensive knowledge and training in crisis management and intervention, case management, mental health, including dealing with trauma and grief.
  • Minimum eight years of related experience in crisis management, mental health and illness, behavioural issues, including dealing with anger management and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students in a university or educational environment with an emphasis on case management, program development and adult education
  • Experience working in a multi-site work environment and the ability to work collaboratively within a complex system of supports and services
  • Demonstrated experience with the development and delivery of educational workshops and presentations in crisis management, behavioural issues and related subject-matter from a best practice perspective
  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various levels of staff and senior academic administrators about issues facing students in crisis and making sound recommendations andstrategies
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with professional staff across the University, in order to set up a network of aid and response for students in crisis and/or experiencing difficulties
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise patience, tact, sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential matters
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to students, staff and faculty in ways that build confidence and trust

  • Ability to work in high stress situations
  • Must be able to recognize the limits of one’s own scope of practice and have an excellent understanding of professional boundaries, as well as have a sound understanding of the Mental Health Act and PHIPA.
  • Ability to work in a highly diverse community with students from varied backgrounds presenting a rangeof difficulties and personal issues
  • Must have no criminal convictions without a pardon and must pass psychological testing.
