Your opportunity:

The Strategic Research Development Officer will support the University of Toronto Scarborough’s research community to advance the University of Toronto Scarborough’s and the University of Toronto’s strategic research administration activities. The position will work in collaboration with the Division of the Vice-President Research & Innovation (VPRI).

Working under the direction of the Director, Office of the Vice-Principal, Research & Innovation with day-to-day work that often involves direct engagementunder the leadership of the Vice-Principal, Research & Innovation, you will be responsible for helping UTSC researchers identify and attract new external research partnerships with private-sector, government, NGO, and community partners, supporting ongoing relationship management, assisting faculty members with their partners in generating proposals for externally sponsored research opportunities, and supporting other initiatives established by the Vice-Principal Research and Innovation, the Associate Vice-Principal Research–Strategic Initiatives, and the Director, Office of the Vice-Principal Research and Innovation.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Advising faculty and administrative staff on funding and research applications/proposals strategies by conducting analysis on research trends and other information to strengthen the applications/proposals
• Coordinating and guiding applicants through various phases of the research funding application process
• Identifying, developing and executing strategies for research and development collaborations
• Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
• Researching and recommending new opportunities for external collaborations and partnerships
• Writing and editing targeted communications to support strategic initiatives
• Coordinating tasks for projects and other strategic initiatives with stakeholders

Essential Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
• Minimum five years of relevant work experience in an academic or industry research environment
• Experience identifying, developing and executing strategies for research partnerships and development collaborations with private, government and/or NGO sector partners
• Knowledge of commercial research opportunities within Canada and internationally
• Expert understanding of Provincial, Canadian and International partnership-based research funding programs, in particular major industry partnership projects led by university researchers. i.e. funded through Mitacs, Ontario Research Fund, National Centers of Excellence,NSERC Programs (including Alliance, Strategic Networks, Strategic Partnership Grants, and Industrial Research Chairs), and the new NFRF suite of programs
• Experience organizing and facilitating meetings, workshops, and training sessions
• Experience using project management tools and developing project schedules including milestones, critical paths, timelines and deliverables and reporting
• Advanced computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Access, Forms, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio)
• Excellent ability to provide ideas/proposals visually using diagrams, charts, graphs, etc.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and marketing skills

Assets (Nonessential):

• Experience developing briefing notes, grants, and presentations is an asset
• Two to three years of project management experience is preferred

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 15 — $86,011 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $109,993. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
