Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Staff Nurse in Pediatric Gastroenterology at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
In accordance with professional nursing standards, the Staff Nurse skillfully administers total patient care based on the individualized needs of assigned patients and families.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Explains procedures and treatments to patient to gain cooperation, understanding and allay apprehension.
  • Administers prescribed medications, teaches patients how to administer injectable medication.
  • Assists in the treatment and examination of patient.
  • Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient.
  • Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies supervisor or Physician of patient’s condition and reactions to drugs, treatment and significant incidents.
  • Responds to life savings situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures and protocol.
  • Documents all nursing history and assessment for patients in their charts.
  • Initiates a patient education plan according to the individualized needs of the patient, as prescribed by Physician and/or hospital policy, including patient and family instruction.
  • Assists in feeding tube replacement / nasogastric tube replacement.
  • Reviews laboratory results and brings abnormal/critical results to the attention of the physician.
  • Answers all clinical phone calls, triages, obtains history and with the physician develops/administers therapeutic plan.
  • Fills out school forms, DYFS forms, Social Security Forms, writes letters, reviews orders from home care/nursing agencies with physician.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement

Rutgers University requires all new employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the employee a medical or religious exemption. Employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment provide proof they have received a booster upon eligibility and upload proof of same. Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of a vaccine approved or authorized for emergency use in the United States or a vaccine that has been listed for emergency use by the World Health Organization. Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine. Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey as a Registered Nurse (RN required).
  • Must have at least two (2) years of pediatric in-patient or out-patient experience.
  • Within the last three (3) years, must have experience in triaging pediatric GI patients and management and care of gastrostomy tubes.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Current CPR/BLS.
  • Certification as a Certified Pediatric Nurse.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Telephone triage skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Electronic Medical Record, including the ability to type and talk at the same time while navigating a Windows environment.
  • Excellent oral and written business English proficiency communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish).
  • Three to five (3-5) years of experience.
Equipment Utilized
Physical Demands and Work Environment PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Ability to lift 25 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office environment. Moderate Noise.
