Senior Research Program Officer/Manager or Research Program Officer/Manager, iPrime, UVA

The Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research and the Precision ImmunoMedicine (iPRIME) Initiative at the University of Virginia is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Program Officer/Manager or Research Program Officer/Manager (PM) to become a key member of the Prominence-to-Preeminence (P2PE) STEM initiative titled “iPRIME: Immunology and Informatics for Precision ImmunoMedicine (iPRIME) in Cardiovascular Disease.” In collaboration with the Schools of Medicine, Engineering and Applied Science, Nursing, and Data Science, the goal of implement Precision ImmunoMedicine (iPRIME) is to designate UVA as the premier location for targeting the immune system for research, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD) using cutting-edge technology, advanced clinical imaging, and innovative, sophisticated artificial intelligence. This position may work extended hours, evenings or weekends.

The PM will be responsible for assisting investigators and their teams to catalyze, facilitate, and accelerate clinical and translational science. This will be an exciting environment, in which there will be opportunities to advance basic, translational and precision medicine research, through fostering a vibrant multi-disciplinary, cross-school collaborative ecosystem that links cardiovascular disease researchers/clinicians, immunologists and advanced computational and machine learning/AI informaticians.    

The PM will be a member of the operations team and will work closely with the core PI’s and staff to implement and administer the iPRIME vision, strategy, and goals. The incumbent will bring specialized technical knowledge in research and will play a critical role in liaising among the technical and operational staff supporting the program, faculty leadership, cores, and other key stakeholders.

Further, the PM will launch and support key seed funding initiative to catalyze the cross-school collaborations at the level of faculty and trainees, symposia, NIH grant initiatives and industry relationships.  

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Acts as project champion and first point of contact for all operational aspects of iPRIME

  • Responsible in ensuring a positive experience and will be expected to be a driver of the appropriate culture and mindset required to support an information-driven value cycle.

  • Meet with iPRIME faculty and/or those wanting to access iPRIME resources in the future to learn about their projects, teach them about institutional resources that may meet their needs, suggest possible collaborators, and assist with writing IRB science and seed grants

  • Manage the end-to-end project life cycle of projects to ensure deliverables are on time; within quality standards; risks identified and mitigated; stakeholders receive timely and accurate communication, and post-completion controls executed.

  • Provides clear and concise communication, both written; verbal, to all levels of the project team, stakeholders, adapting style to accommodate a diversity of audiences and situations.

  • Create reports, review and explain trends to determine program effectiveness; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program.

  • Write and edit content for proposals, peer-reviewed publications, websites and social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc), donor stewardship, and other program activities under the general direction of the PI.

  • Assist with the development of research grants, (i.e., may suggest new funding opportunities, write portions of grants, and/or summarize data for grant support) that closely correlate to furthering and continuing the iPRIME program for the future.

  • Represent PI as the key contact and subject matter expert and develop communications for internal and external constituencies.

  • Organize and/or participate in outreach activities such as events, partnerships, fundraising, training, and conferences. Lead workshops and facilitate meetings.

  • Monitor expenses, budgets, and finances of the program. Make recommendations on funding based on program spending.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualified candidates must have:

Research Program Officer/Manager Minimum Requirements:  

Master’s degree required and at least four years of relevant experience. Research experience in a relevant scientific field is preferred.

Senior Program Officer/Manager Minimum Requirements: 

Advanced degree is required and four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. in related scientific field.

Prior experience in technical and nontechnical writing.

Familiarity with funding agencies and academic research funding sources.

Experience working in an academic environment

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.

  • Knowledge of University, state, and federal policies and regulations (Preferred)

  • Ability to conduct activities and make decisions according to ethical standards.

  • Knowledge of a variety of administrative functions that include financial, operational, and administrative policies and procedures.

  • Ability to synthesize information, provide advice, and address needs independently.

  • Ability to clearly articulate specific information.

  • Ability to present information in multiple forums to a range of audiences.

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team. Work with senior leaders to accomplish goals.

  • Ability to lead, train, and functionally supervise.

  • Ability to work well with UVA and colleagues and clients and with external organizations.

  • Promote Culture of Safety: Demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety; communicates safety concerns; uses and promotes safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned.

  • Subject to and expected to comply with all applicable University policies and procedures.

Physical Demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This position will remain open until filled. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.
