This position presents a fantastic opportunity to work in a varied role for one of the largest and most productive criminology research communities in the world. Under the Griffith Criminology Institute (GCI) criminology scholars create knowledge on the causes, nature, responses to and prevention of crime and associated disadvantage. GCI members are undertaking cutting edge research to address a range of key crime challenges for society including preventing violence, breaking cycles of crime and inequality, enhancing security, transforming justice and reducing Indigenous over-representation in the criminal justice system.

GCI also works closely with partners to apply research for real-world outcomes. A key priority is to establish and maintain partnerships with industry and other external organisations to deliver social benefit. Other priorities are to grow the sources and quantum of research income, maintain current high esteem and research rankings and to deliver excellent research training outcomes to a large cohort of associated HDR students.

About the Opportunity
The Senior Research Development Officer (SRDO) plays a pivotal role within the Institute, working with researchers to stimulate future research growth and sustainability in criminology, policing and security, prevention, justice, and corrections.

Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Facilitating and supporting all research development activities for the Institute and helping to create a vibrant research culture.
  • Growing the amount and sources of research income.
  • Helping identify, foster and develop research talent, including among PhD students.
  • Managing internal peer review processes for external competitive grant applications and meeting with members to maintain a pipeline of applicants, identify suitable funding opportunities, help develop track record and advise potential applicants.
  • Communicating GCI’s research both internally within Griffith through the provision of support for identifying and writing nominations for internal recognition for academics and externally through the provision of support for applications for prestigious awards and fellowships and helping shape research translation platforms.

This is a part-time (0.8FTE) fixed term position (available until 30 June 2027) based at the Griffith University Mount Gravatt campus.

About You
The occupant of this position will hold a tertiary degree and relevant experience in research development, or an equivalent alternative combination of relevant knowledge training and/or extensive experience in academia, industry or government, preferably in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

In addition to the above, you will demonstrate:

  • The ability to identify, conceptualise and develop successful grant applications.
  • Knowledge of international and national research policy environments, granting scheme rules and current issues and emerging trends in the higher education research sector.
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving and research development skills, combined with an ability to work under broad direction, self-start and to work independently in a team environment.
  • Well-developed communication, negotiation and relationship management skills including the ability to liaise with academic staff and colleagues at all levels.

A high degree of awareness of the criminology research environment, good understanding of commercial research and consultancy work, strategic knowledge of the broader Australian research environment, and familiarity with philanthropic funding pitches would be desirable.

Salary Range
The base salary for a HEW Level 8 is in the range $100,567 – $113,136 (on a proportionate basis) per annum, plus 17% employer superannuation. The total package is in the range $117,664 – $132,369 (on a proportionate basis) per annum.
