Senior Research Assistant, Translational Biotechnology – Protein Analytics

About this Opportunity

This position will be based at the National Biologics Facility (NBF), within AIBN. The NBF provides high-quality, custom discovery and manufacturing solutions for the development and production of recombinant biopharmaceuticals in mammalian cells.  The facility works with the biotechnology community spanning academic and industrial researchers to help drive their research from early discovery through to pre-clinical development and receives funding from the Commonwealth Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy, via Therapeutic Innovation Australia. The successful candidate will help drive the next generation of innovative therapeutics and must have a passion for translational research. It will suit those looking to take the step of moving into the Biotechnology sector.

The primary purpose of the position is to provide technical support to the Queensland node of the National Biologics Facility, predominantly in the areas of protein analytics, characterisation and quality assurance, but also in upstream and downstream bioprocessing. The focus will be on development of these proteins as therapeutic agents.

Responsibilities

  • Recombinant protein expression with a focus on advanced mammalian expression systems

  • Protein characterisation

    • Develop and validate analytical assays for the characterisation of typical biologics parameters

    • Undertake analytical assays and communicate results in detailed batch reports

  • Communicate results in detailed batch reports

  • Assistance with maintaining the Facility’s Quality Systems

  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures with a high attention to detail

  • Assist in the maintenance and daily operation of the laboratory, clean room facilities and equipment

  • Any other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor

  • Contributes to the safe and efficient operation of research equipment, infrastructure, methodologies, and protocols

  • Ensures the appropriate storage, handling and disposal of chemicals, equipment, stores and/or samples/specimens

About You

  • Qualifications and training equivalent to a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in a relevant area (Bioengineering, Bioprocessing, Chemical Engineering)

  • General experience working in the field of biotechnology, bioprocessing, recombinant protein expression or protein analytics

  • Experience in the analytical characterisation of recombinant proteins related to biopharmaceutical development, including product release assays

  • Experience in following Standard Operating Procedures, record keeping and preparation of batch reports

  • Responsible approach to equipment use and maintenance

  • Computer literacy including experience with standard office software, electronic databases

  • Ability to work independently on routine procedures and collaboratively with colleagues

  • Well-organised, methodical and self-motivated with a combination of excellent oral and written communication skills.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the biologics manufacturing industry in GMP environments

What We Can Offer  

This is a Full-time, fixed-term position to December 2023 at HEW 5.  

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $72,212 – $80,430 plus super of up to 17%.

The total FTE package will be in the range $84,488 – $94,103 per annum.
