Job Summary: Sierra Streams Institute (SSI) seeks a Restoration and Forestry Technician to assist with Riparian Restoration, Forest Management, and Research projects in the Sierra Nevada mountains and foothills. The Restoration and Forestry Technician will primarily conduct fieldwork and data entry and analysis for four projects; the Dry Creek Riparian Habitat Restoration project at Beale Air Force Base, the Sierra Foothill Forests Climate Resilience Project just outside of Nevada City, and two Forest Management Plan development projects on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands on Deer Creek and the Bear River. About the Organization: Sierra Streams Institute is a watershed monitoring, research, restoration, and educational group based in Nevada City, California in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Our mission is to link water, science, and people for the benefit of human and environmental health. Sierra Streams has grown to become a vitally important voice in the regional scientific community. We work with local, state, and federal agencies as well as tribes, land trusts, universities and other non-profits to find solutions to the problems that afflict watersheds throughout the region that share the challenges resulting from a century of gold mining, development, and agriculture. Sierra Streams has developed a reputation over the course of its 23 year history for the rigor of its science, its ability to foster community stewardship of creeks, and its many collaborative efforts with a wide range of groups, schools, and agencies. Key Tasks: ● Work with Restoration Ecologist to conduct field vegetation surveys, aquatic physical habitat surveys, and other pre and post-project monitoring at restoration sites ● Work with Restoration Ecologist to plant, irrigate, and maintain native vegetation at riparian restoration sites ● Work with Restoration Ecologist to apply a Process-based Restoration (PBR) approach to all current restoration projects, including assisting in conceptualization discussions, mapping, and associated analyses ● Work with Forest Ecologist to conduct forest inventories, including identifying tree species, measuring tree diameters, coring trees for aging, estimating fuel loads, and processing tree cores at the lab ● Work with Forest Ecologist to provide tree core measurement, data entry and analysis, and mapping assistance as needed
