Bats in Utah are facing multiple emerging threats to their persistence, the greatest of which is the disease white-nose syndrome (WNS). As WNS spreads across the continent, data on species impact is needed to guide conservation efforts. To date, WNS has not been documented in Utah, but given past rates of spread, is expected to be confirmed in the coming years. Results from this project will serve as baseline population measures against which any future changes can be compared.
This position is largely quantitative, the Researcher will primarily focus on data analysis and writing, with opportunities to lead or co-author publications and the potential to investigate additional questions of interest using existing datasets. Opportunities for the Researcher to assist Biologists within UDWR with fieldwork will also be available. Main goals of the position include:
• Define the geographic range of each bat species in the state based on historical data.
• Quantify occupancy, detection probability, and trend within the defined ranges for each species from Utah monitoring protocol data.
• Investigate the impact of landscape and climate variables on bat species occupancy, detection probability, and trend.
• Identify high-priority landscapes for conservation actions.
Position open until filled. Start date can be as early as possible.
