Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Associate Director (AD), Building Infrastructure, Faculty of Science of McGill University, the incumbent will work closely with the AD (Science) and in collaboration with Facilities Management and Ancillary Services (FMAS) will act as the principal project manager on diverse capital projects for the Faculty. Responsibilities include the management and development of projects related to research infrastructure and teaching laboratories.  As the project lead for the Faculty, the incumbent will work closely with the research departments on space planning, relocations, renovations or new construction of research infrastructure. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide expertise and recommendations to researchers and departments on laboratory design and optimal use of space and resources.
  • Liaise with researchers and Facility Management and Ancillary Services (FMAS) to assess technical requirements of new research equipment, identify any necessary infrastructure upgrades and propose cost efficient solutions.
  • Develop budgets for small scale projects related to new hires and work with FMAS to identify possible strategy for executing projects within reasonable timelines.
  • Act as a liaison between the Faculty and FMAS on large-scale research projects or operational/deferred maintenance projects affecting Science researchers.
  • Participate in project planning and work with various stakeholders to achieve clear and concise scope definition, scheduling, budget, execution and delivery of the project.
  • Support local building directors (BD) in dealing with deferred maintenance issues which negatively affect researchers.  Provide recommendations and solutions to the Associate Director and Building Director, and work on strategies to avoid or mitigate negative impact on researchers during projects.
  • Assist departments with planning and execution of major lab relocations required for renovation or new construction projects.
  • Collect recurrent building maintenance problems/concerns from occupants, investigate to confirm the facts and liaise with Facility Management to establish and prioritize corrections.
  • Participate in University Teaching Lab Working Group (UTLWG) and assist Associate Director in identifying and reporting Faculty priorities for possible institutional funding.
  • Assist in yearly space audits and reporting of all Science research infrastructure, both on-campus and at various Field Stations.
  • Assist in updating office procedures manual and communicating Faculty policies to departments and new Building Directors.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Knowledge of construction industry practices and procedures is essential, including Quebec Building Code.
  • Experience and knowledge of infrastructure needs and safety concerns, in a research environment.
  • Experience in Facilities Operations and Maintenance, building design, and/or project management.
  • Problem solving, negotiation and organizational skills.
  • Must be client focused with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Goal-oriented, autonomous and a self-starter requiring minimal supervision. Strong analytical background and project planning skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure on multiple activities/projects, to meet client needs.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft office tools including Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat. Knowledge of AutoCAD an asset.
  • Bilingual (French & English), spoken & written.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree 3 Years Related Experience with Bachelor’s Degree / DEC III 5 Years Related Experience with DEC III

Annual Salary:

(MPEX Grade 05) $65,500.00 – $81,870.00 – $98,240.00
