Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow – Hearing & Culturally & Linguistically Diverse (CALD) health research

About This Opportunity 

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow with expertise in hearing loss and/or accessibility and equity of health care services to join the dedicated team of researchers within our world-class School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. The School is home to the professional disciplines of Audiology, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech Pathology and is at the forefront of innovation in health and well-being education and research in Australia and around the world. The School also plays host to our Centre for Hearing Research (CHEAR) which you will support in this role.

CHEAR is a coalition of leading researchers across disciplines including audiology, speech pathology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology and health economics with an interest in prevention, identification and management of hearing loss across the lifespan.

Working closely with the project lead Professor Piers Dawes, you will work with people from Culturally & Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities to understand their engagement with and outcomes from Hearing Services Programme (HSP) services. You will partner with members of CALD communities and HSP audiologists to co-design and evaluate interventions for access to culturally safe HSP services.

In this position, you will be actively responsible for the oversight, day-to-day running and management of the study, maintaining accurate and legible study-relevant documentation (written and electronic) and ensuring all project milestones and deliverables are met on time and to target. You will also coordinate and supervise the activities of two research assistants in two different sites (including Brisbane and Sydney) and be accountable to the study steering committee.

This position is based primarily at our vibrant St Lucia campus in Brisbane, however you may also be required to travel to other clinical sites on occasion (including Melbourne and Sydney).

As a Research Fellow at Level B, Key responsibilities include: 

1. Research

  • Develop an independent and/or team research program to achieve national recognition and impact in the research area.
  • Produces quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in national research journals, other appropriate refereed publications and conference publications, with a lead role in some outputs.
  • Participate in or contribute as chief investigator role (often in conjunction with more experienced researchers) in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities, which includes actively seeking, obtaining and managing research funding.
  • Work with colleagues in the development of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.
  • Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.
  • Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.

2. Teaching

  • Where undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is undertaken achieve teaching quality as indicated by approved surveys and outcomes for students and improve or innovate where appropriate in response to feedback.

3. Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Demonstrate a track record of the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.
  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and management and development of researcher capability and skill.
  • Facilitate engagement opportunities for Higher Degree by Research supervisees
  • Effective lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.
  • Manage staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.
  • Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.

4. Citizenship and Service

  • Demonstrate behaviours that align to the UQ values.
  • Shows leadership of self and others through mentoring, collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the unit
  • Provide support to other academic positions and unit operations as needed during other team members absences.
  • Effectively and efficiently manage internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.
  • Collaborate in service activities external to the immediate organisation unit.
  • Actively pursue and develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

As a Senior Research Fellow at Level C, Key Responsibilities include:

 Research

  • Maintain and active record of producing quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms as lead contributor, by publishing or exhibiting in national research journals, other appropriate refereed publications and conference publications.
  • Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users through translation.
  • Undertake team research that where possible impacts on policy, practices and/or commercialisation resulting in national recognition and developing international recognition in the research area.
  • Undertake data analysis working closely with the qualitative and quantitative analysis leads and prepare high-quality research publications in collaboration with other members of the project;
  • Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.
  • Encourage, initiate and coordinate strategic collaborative research projects in related area of expertise across University, national and international levels.
  • Deliver project milestones and deliverables on time and to target and undertake any additional tasks as appropriate to the position.

 Teaching

  • Where undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is undertaken achieve teaching quality as indicated by approved surveys and outcomes for students and improve or innovate where appropriate in response to feedback.

 Supervision and Researcher Development 

  • Act as Principal Supervisor to Higher Degree by Research students.
  • Demonstrates and leads others in the responsible conduct of research.
  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and management and development of researcher capability and skill.
  • Lead the facilitation of engagement opportunities for supervisees including managing the day-to-day study activities and co-ordination of Research Assistants and Data Collectors.
  • Effective lead and develop employee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.
  • Manage staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.
  • Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.

 Citizenship and Service

  • Consistently demonstrate behaviours that align to the UQ values.
  • Shows leadership of self and others through mentoring, collaboration and a responsibility for staff wellbeing.
  • Demonstrate a track record of achievement in relation to internal service roles, including high level of collaboration and participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.
  • Represent the study on the Project Steering Group
  • Disseminate results including presentations at seminars, and conferences and development of the project web site
  • Undertake administrative processes as required.
  • Establish a track record of collaboration in relation to external service activities.
  • Advance external links and partnerships by collaborating on external activities and sustain relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

About You

Joining a lively environment at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, you will work with some of the leading researchers in health sciences. You should have a proven track record of being able to write and publish scientific manuscripts and will work closely with and report to Professor Piers Dawes.

Our ideal candidate will possess:

  • A PhD in psychology, audiology or related discipline
  • Experience undertaking clinical research with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience undertaking clinical research with older people, children or other vulnerable populations, particularly those with hearing impairment
  • Demonstrated ability in qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills and research methods due to the mixed methods approach in the study.
  • A growing profile in research in the discipline area along with strong knowledge of the subject area of the project and/or relevant techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for team communication and dissemination of findings to the academic as well as lay communities.
  • Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.
  • A growing record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
  • Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with a strong contribution to external activities
  • An ability to work independently, problem solve and manage time effectively.
  • Confident when dealing with research participants and clinicians, displaying good communication skills and initiative, particularly in challenging or sensitive situations.
  • Knowledge of the governance requirement for conducting clinical research (particularly in culturally and linguistically diverse populations), including such aspects as maintenance of study site files, data quality and confidentiality etc.

In addition, at Academic Level C

  • National recognition in the area of expertise, with an internationally developing profile and an established record of publications in reputed refereed journal and presenting at conferences.
  • A strong record of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.
  • A solid record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
  • A growing record of meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with a strong contribution to external activities

Desirable:

  • Experience in clinical trials with vulnerable populations
  • Experience conducting research in hearing care settings
  • Quantitative research experience including data analysis plans for within trial analyses, gained from industry or academia
  • Experience of studies based on the MRC’s guidance on the development of complex interventions
  • Publications in hearing or CALD health research

What We Can Offer  

This is a Full-time, 100% FTE Fixed-term  position through to June 2025 at Academic Level B/C.

At Academic Level B, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $101,533 – $120,570 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $118,794 – $141,067 per annum.

At Academic Level C, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $124,378 – $143,415 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $145,522 – $167,796 per annum.
