Research within the Department of Physiology covers a wide range of integrative, cellular and molecular physiology, with particular strengths in sensory and systems neurosciences, cardiovascular and renal physiology, and metabolic disease. It is anticipated that the Department will play an important role in providing research underpinning the new heart hospital to be built on the Clayton campus. The Opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to provide a variety of high-quality research services to the Karunakaran Lab (Cardiometabolic Inflammation and Cell Death) currently based at the Department of Physiology, Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI), Clayton campus. You will form interdisciplinary collaborations with researchers within Monash University, including the newly built Victorian Heart Hospital (opening end of 2022).

You will work to conduct ethical, innovative and internationally competitive research investigating novel mechanisms by which inflammation and cell death drives cardiometabolic diseases (e.g. obesity, atherosclerosis) and how these processes link to the circadian clock, and vice versa. You will also be involved in processing clinical samples via collaborations at the newly built Victorian Heart Hospital (opening end of 2022). The ultimate goal of this research to is identify new mechanisms and potential therapies to treat cardiometabolic diseases (e.g. atherosclerosis, diabetes and obesity).

You will focus on conducting in vitro and in vivo mouse experiments, as well as flow cytometry and ‘omics analysis. The successful applicant will be on a fellowship-track and write grant applications and high impact research papers, conduct literature reviews, supervising or co-supervising under/graduate student(s) and 1x RA.

About you:

You will have:

  • A doctoral qualification in the relevant discipline (i.e., CVD, cardiometabolic disease etc) or a closely related field
  • A track record of refereed research publications
  • Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to manage junior staff or supervise students, and adapt to the evolving research directions
  • Experience in mouse models of cardiovascular and/or metabolic diseases, and/or bioinformatics and ‘omics data

This role is a full-time position; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

This position is for 1 year, with the opportunity for renewal to 3 years.
