Realise your vision and become one of the research leaders of tomorrow

From revolutionising the rail infrastructure and improving the lives of people affected by dementia, to gaining a deeper understanding of culture and creativity, research at the University of Southampton addresses some of the most challenging issues facing society today.

This is a wonderful opportunity if you have a PhD degree or equivalent professional qualifications and experience to further sharpen your fundamental skills in machine learning. Ranging from traditional to quantum computing, this project provides opportunities for you to challenge yourself on an everyday basis.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Open to researchers from around the world and from diverse backgrounds, the scheme supports those who have the potential and ambition to become leaders in their field, and who want to achieve the remarkable and build an inclusive world.

 About you

You will be an expert in machine learning. You will also possess strong computer programming skills especially in Python. Within the realms of machine learning, deep learning is something that will be needed on this project on an everyday basis, with relevant project experience highly sought after. You will be valued if you possess some fundamental understanding of natural language processing. It will be highly beneficial if you possess an understanding of Bayesian deep learning and probabilistic models for text. While the project might exploit quantum computing resources, you are not required to be an expert in this area. You will be working on a cloud environment such as Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, or others.

This is a unique opportunity for you in several ways. The project is in collaboration with industry. As a result, you will get to work in a shared space with researchers from industry and university. While you will be based and affiliated with the University of Southampton, you will be working with industry research experts on an everyday basis.

You will have exemplary powers of communication, alongside a collaborative approach.

 What we can offer you

  • a world-class research environment
  • a high-end computing environment
  • chance to work within the confines of industry and academia that brings a unique experience
