About This Opportunity  

This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow to focus their efforts on developing their expertise and emerging research profile in their discipline. At this level it is expected that the incumbent will contribute to service and engagement roles and activities.

Key responsibilities include:  

1. Research

  • Conduct experimental studies in UQ and industry labs based on the proposed program plan and/or discussion with industry partner.

  • Produce project reports and present research outcomes to the industrial partner and ARC Hub.

  • Produces quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in high quality outlets.

  • Contribute to transfer of knowledge and practices to industry through attendance and presentation at industry events and conferences.

  • Work with colleagues in the development of new joint research projects with the objective of attracting external funding.

  • Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology, and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.

2. Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).

  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.

  • Effective lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.

  • Foster the Institute’s relations with industry, government departments, professional bodies, and the wider community.

  • Any other duties as reasonably directed by supervisors.

3. Citizenship and Service

  • Demonstrate citizenship behaviours that align to the UQ values.

  • Shows leadership of self through collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the unit

  • Provide support to other academic positions and unit operations as needed during other team members absences.

  • Contribute to internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.

  • Collaborate in service activities external to the immediate organisation unit.

  • Begin to develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies, and the wider community.

4. Other
 

Ensure you are aware of and comply with legislation and University policy relevant to the duties undertaken, including but not exclusive to:

  • The University’s Code of Conduct .

  • Requirements of the Queensland occupational health and safety (OH&S) legislation and related OH&S responsibilities and procedures developed by the University or Institute/School.

  • The adoption of sustainable practices in all work activities and compliance with associated legislation and related University sustainability responsibilities and procedures .

  • Requirements of the Education Services  for Overseas Students Act 2000, the National Code 2007 and associated legislation, and related responsibilities and procedures developed by the University.

About You

Essential

  • Masters or PhD (preferred) in the area of chemical engineering, physical chemistry, materials science or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training .

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in the area of material/chemical synthesis and characterisation, energy storage devices.

  • Knowledge of aqueous electrochemistry, physical chemistry (esp. halide), and material chemistry of functional materials (esp. carbon).

  • Knowledge of advance analytical techniques for electrochemical investigation.

  • Competence with software development (esp. Python) and mathematical model building for chemistry.

  • Commitment to upholding the University’s values, and with the outstanding personal qualities of openness, respectfulness, and integrity.

  • Highly developed interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with colleagues.

  • Excellent skills in paper/proposal writing and progress reporting.

  • Strong motivation with the ability to work independently, design / interpret experiments, and meet deadlines with excellent organisational skills.

  • Proven ability to work successfully both independently and collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Desirable

  • Industrial experience with batteries or renewable energy.

  • Experience in liaising and collaborating with industries and/or other external agencies to develop co-operative research initiatives.

  • Knowledge of the processes relating to the identification, protection, and exploitation of intellectual property.

What We Can Offer  

This is a full-time, fixed term position for up to 2 years at Academic Level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $72,144.35 – $96,530.67 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $84,408.89 – 112,940.88 per annum.  

The following flexible employment options may be available for this role:  ​Part time/job share; some working from home; variable start or finish times; compressed hours; purchased leave; flex-time.
