Position Focus:
The Research Associate oversees data management, processing, and quality assurance in a highly active, interdisciplinary research lab focused on autism and early development in the Yale Child Study Center. Working closely with principal investigators and senior research personnel, the Research Associate is responsible for: Managing relational databases (Microsoft Access) housing data originating from clinical assessments, questionnaires, and other sources for multiple research studies. Leading the ongoing development and maintenance of custom pipelines (MATLAB, Python, R) to process eye-tracking data. Training and supervising research assistants and fellows in data collection, entry, and quality control procedures. Developing queries (SQL) and scripts (R, Python, or statistical software) to export, combine, transform, and clean data from behavioral, electrophysiological, neuroimaging, and eye-tracking studies. Contributing to the early stages of data analysis by conducting exploratory analyses and creating data visualizations. Generating reports on study enrollment, data quality, and data availability. Preparing and submitting data to the NIMH Data Archive (NDA) and other data-sharing consortiums and repositories. Contributing to the development and implementation of data management plans for grant-funded research projects. Supporting research staff in the preparation of conference abstracts, manuscripts, progress reports, and grant applications.
Essential Duties
1. Coordinates and carries out the overall research process and provides critical operational support to the program. 2. Performs independent research, participates in research planning and investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions. 3. Collaborates with the Principle Investigator in the design, testing, implementation and evaluation of survey instruments as necessary. 4. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of the Principal Investigator(s). 5. Prepares research protocols and materials; schedules project meetings and monitors the project timeline adjusting as necessary. 6. Manages all project/research data collection, files, and sharing. 7. Develops educational materials, forms, questionnaires and writes procedure manuals for program. 8. Performs literature reviews and contributes to manuscript writing and publishes articles for peer-reviewed journals; presents research progress and findings. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Demonstrated ability working with relational databases and writing SQL queries.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Proven ability to understand, write, and debug code in MATLAB, R, and/or Python.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Proven ability to solve problems and troubleshoot.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Proven ability to prioritize and handle multiple simultaneous projects and competing priorities.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Master’s degree or PhD in information science, computer science, statistics, data science, quantitative social science, or related field. Familiarity with Microsoft Access and/or Microsoft SQL Server. Proficiency with statistical software suites such as R, SPSS, or SAS. Familiarity with use of Git and GitHub for version control and collaborative software development.
