Position Description

HBS seeks a Research Associate (RA) to partner with a faculty member in the Entrepreneurial Management; General Management unit on creating and editing cases and course materials.

Under the general direction of the faculty, the RA will synthesize, analyze, and produce original written materials for all forms of academic writing. They will conduct background research, propose and create new cases, and update existing cases or materials for classroom use. They may collect and interpret data or use in cases and reports.

The RA reports directly to their faculty supervisor and an administrative manager in the Research Staff Services office. Ideal RA candidates will be comfortable in an environment that requires a high level of independence and intellectual curiosity and the ability to use discretionary judgment.

Primary responsibilities:

Develop and write cases, articles, case supplements, project reports, and policy memos from start to finish creating original writing based on research, subject-area expertise, and interviews.

Provide quantitative and qualitative analysis, writing, and editing of academic journal articles, HBS cases, and HBS teaching notes. Propose, develop, synthesize, and provide analysis of literature reviews.

Partner with HBS faculty member on topics central to HBS research agenda. Provide subject-area expertise, analysis, and interpretation to faculty members. Act with a high degree of autonomy. Serve as a collaborator and thought-partner.

Independently manage all timelines and deliverables for multiple projects with competing priorities. Exercise independent decision making with regard to progression of research project and methodologies. Must be able to structure assignments and keep faculty member informed as necessary, using own judgment.

Ensure compliance with department, University, and federal regulations. Complete work with only general direction. Be aware of department, School, University policies and potential outside research policies.

This role is also responsible for other duties as assigned. 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Preference for candidate with business and finance terminology familiarity, as well as writing experience.

Evidence of outstanding academic achievement and excellent writing and editing skills necessary. Indication of independent research experience and/or applied experience. Proven ability to work independently and creatively. Strong skills related to the Microsoft Office Suite are expected.

This position requires an individual capable of consistent use of discretion, judgment, and initiative.
The candidate must have extremely high standards in terms of quality of work, attention to detail, strong organization skills, and absolute commitment to task completion. He or she must be able to balance multiple tasks and shifting priorities under tight deadlines at an accelerated pace when necessary. It is helpful if the candidate is familiar with navigating a complex organization, such as Harvard Business School.

Additional Information

This is a half-time term appointment starting as soon as possible, with possible reappointment for the next year and further. All Research Associate roles at Harvard Business School are benefits-eligible and structured as one-year term appointments with potential for renewal.

This role is offered as a hybrid (some combination of onsite and remote) where you are required to be onsite at our Boston, MA based campus. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.
