PICU is a 12-bed unit who takes care of critically ill pediatric patients too sick to be treated on the general pediatric floor including congenital heart patients of all ages.

Within the PICU, children from multiple surgical specialties including neurosurgery, cardiac/ cardiothoracic surgery, ECMO, trauma/general pediatric surgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, endocrinology receive advanced level care. In addition, the PICU staff handle post-operative care for those patients who receive kidney transplants.

If you aspire to become a PICU nurse, we have opportunities available for experienced nurses to obtain a basic understanding of the procedures and practices in the PICU in our upcoming Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Internship Program beginning April 2023.

The internship program consists of an eight-week comprehensive orientation with combined didactic, simulations, and hands-on beside training, weekly check-ins with preceptors and leadership.

The new PICU nurse will be oriented to all aspects of inpatient pediatric intensive care and congenital cardiac intensive care. A pathway will be created for the staff nurse by providing a base knowledge, technical and clinical skills that will result in an individualized and straight forward transition. The focus of the orientation is to enable the staff nurse to function in a safe, effective and professional manner.

Educational Requirements:

• BSN or enrolled in a BSN program

License/Certification/Registration Requirements:

• California State RN License required.
• American Heart Association or American Red Cross Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and ACLS prior to starting the internship

Experience:

• Minimum 1-year recent acute RN experience
• Must have satisfactory rating on last performance evaluation and provide a copy for review.
• Must be free of disciplinary action for one year.
• Must commit to working in PICU for at least 18 months after completion of training program.
