Position Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit Established in 1936, we are the second oldest theatre department in the country. Our faculty members are both scholars and artists, teachers and practitioners, constantly moving back and forth between the classroom and the theatre. PlayMakers Repertory Company (LORT D theatre) is embedded within the Department and the symbiotic relationship, between the Department of Dramatic Art and PlayMakers Repertory Company, builds upon a more than one-hundred-year legacy. The Joan H. Gillings Center for Dramatic Art is the crucible where students transform learning into practice every day. Our mission is to educate students to think critically and write cogently about the creative and artistic processes of theatre, its literature, and its history.
Position Summary The Department of Dramatic Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a professor of Acting and Directing, with expertise in Musical Theater. We invite applications from tenured Professors and tenured advanced Associate Professors and welcome applications from individuals who may have had nontraditional career paths, or who may have taken time off for family reasons (e.g., childcare, caring for disabled or elderly family). This position will lead the new Musical Theater minor launched in the fall of 2022 and teach in the undergraduate Drama major, for a total of two courses per semester. These courses may include acting (beginning and advanced) and directing, (beginning and advanced). We welcome the professor to teach areas of special interest such as choreography, vocal techniques, stage combat, dance, or movement. The candidate will also direct the annual musical for our undergraduate production arm, the Kenan Theatre Company. This tenured position requires active involvement in significant scholarly research, publication, and/or creative achievement in the wider field. The candidate will maintain a professional profile as an actor and/or director. In addition to directing the undergraduate musical, they may also act or direct with PlayMakers Repertory company, our LORT D theater in residence within the Department.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Master of Fine Arts degree from an accredited institution or equivalent professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience At least five years of experience as an acting/directing teacher at the university, college, or professional level and have demonstrated professional excellence as evidenced by prior professional achievement and ongoing professional contacts. The candidate will also have a deep commitment to Access, Equity and Diversity values and be able to demonstrate that in their work. Applicants are encouraged to describe, in their letter of intent, how their scholarship contributes to building and supporting diverse communities. We are seeking a candidate with expertise in and appreciation for the current musical theater canon but who has a progressive vision and can reimagine the form and its impacts in actor training.
