SUMMARY:

The Professional Counselor II provides counseling services to assist students in maximizing their potential for personal and academic success.  Exhibit a commitment to a developmental model by initiating and implementing interventions that promote a healthy campus environment and meet the mental health needs of the University community.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides individual, group, and couples counseling.
  • Conducts intakes, screenings, psychological assessments, and utilizes other technology to deliver alternative methods of care.
  • Engages in client staffing, case management, consultation and referral.
  • Assist with same day crisis assessment and counselor-on-duty services as assigned. Participates in weekly case conferences and informal case consultations to coordinate client care. Obtains professional consultation when appropriate.
  • Engages in program development, educational outreach, and evaluation.
  • Provides supervision and training for interns and practicum students.
  • Works collaboratively with internal and external colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary mental health team.
  • Provide consultation and outreach services to students, faculty and staff related to mental health issues and students concerns.
  • Engages in professional development activities to maintain licensure.
  • Provides service to the University through involvement in committees.
  • Utilizes Electronic Medical Records System to maintain client records in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Center Director.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Master’s degree in applicable field.
  • Experience: Three (3) years post graduate clinical experience required.
  • Knowledge / Skills: Understanding of relevant counseling intervention models, programs and resources. Knowledge of the mental health needs of a university population. Excellent organizational and administrative abilities. Strong work ethic and sense of collegiality.  Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Knowledge of student development.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to present information clearly and concisely.
  • Licensing/Professional Certifications: Licensed or eligible for licensure in Texas as LCSW, LPC or LPC-Supervisor, or Licensed Psychologist with requirement to obtain Texas licensure within first six months.
  • Physical Requirements:  Ability to lift and carry up to 40lbs. Ability to stand for extended periods of time for outreach events.
  • Other Requirements:
    Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

Doctorate in counseling, psychology, or social work. Five years’ experience in counseling or related field. Licensed as a (LPC or LCSW)   supervisor in Texas. Experience in a college counseling center or other relevant university setting. Recent training or certification in Advanced Trauma-Informed Care. Bi-lingual (preferably Spanish speaking). Reside within 45 minutes of Texas A&M University – Commerce campus.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

Graduate assistants, interns, and practicum students.
