Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Principal Laboratory Technician for the Brain Health Institute. Under direction, the Principal Laboratory Technician performs technical laboratory procedures and analyses in support of specialized research activities of the laboratory. Oversees lower-level Technicians and support personnel and volunteers as needed. Assists in the design, set-up, and conducting of experiments as needed. Orders all lab supplies, animal orders and reconciles all animal per diem charges as needed. Special projects as assigned.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Involved in research activities specialized to the BHI lab in regard to data collection, analysis and interpretation.
  • May assign and instruct support personnel in various phases of technical analysis, experimentation, and laboratory testing work, as may be required. Additionally trains and supervises all lab personnel in shared equipment use such as cryostats, highly specialized Stereo Axio Zoom and Leica microscopes.
  • Oversees the preparation and standardization of reagents and standard solutions, culture media and stains, and antigens used in the section.
  • Supervises the activities and work product of the hourly lab technicians and students employed in the BHI lab.
  • Takes the lead in packing, unpacking, storing and classification of specimens tested.
  • Orders lab reagents and supplies in a timely and efficient manner, keeps accurate records of all transactions and resolves any issues with vendors, maintaining accurate and detailed records of lab expenses.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility . Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine . Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Associates Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year related experience in a laboratory environment.
