The position is associated with the research project CLIMCULT (ClimateCultures: Socionatural entanglements in Little Ice Age in Norway, 1500-1800 ) funded by the Norwegian Research Council (grant number 315441). The candidate is expected to present a research project closely connected to the main project.

More about the position

CLIMCULT investigates how Nordic societies responded to the last known period of rapid climate change, the so-called Little Ice Age. It studies how climate and culture interacted during this period and what this might teach us about current challenges. The interdisciplinary project brings together historians, climatologists, and museologists and disseminates its findings in partnership with museums and Oslo’s new Klimahuset.

The postdoctoral research fellowship will focus mainly on the dissemination of the project results. The successful candidate will be tasked with contributing to ongoing research and creating an exhibition (physical, virtual or hybrid) disseminating the research findings to a general audience. The candidate will also be involved with a series of “climate narration labs” engaging non-academic stakeholders. As a result, very good communication skills are essential for this position. The candidates own project can explore historical, museological or climate-communication perspectives related to CLIMCULTs agenda.

The researcher will be expected to cooperate closely with the other participants in the project and its museum partners (Klimahuset Oslo, NTNU University Museum Trondheim). This includes participation in meetings, workshops and conferences.

The researcher will be based in Oslo with an expected start date of March 2023.

The position is available for a period of 2 years.

The successful candidate is expected to become part of the research environment/network of the department and contribute to its development. The main purpose of postdoctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

  • The candidate’s research project must be closely connected to the main project
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and a Scandinavian language
