Description

The Savanna lab in the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at New Mexico State University is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral researcher. Candidates with interests in macroscale patterns in forest structure, tree physiology and phylogeny are encouraged to apply. We are looking for candidates interested to join a team exploring global patterns and drivers of woody plant height, canopy cover, and biomass using space-borne LiDAR systems (e.g. GEDI and ICESat2). The new postdoctoral position will also contribute to Jornada Basin long-term ecological research for vegetation structure and dynamics in drylands of the southwestern USA and elsewhere. The postdoctoral researcher will lead analysis of aboveground biomass estimation using ICESat2 and GEDI, and explore factors and processes determining height and aboveground biomass variability, but with flexibility to also develop complementary new research directions. Our group strongly supports postdoc professional development, including travel for conferences and workshops for scientific networking, skills development, the ability to develop independent project directions and submit proposals.

NMSU postdoc salaries and benefits are nationally competitive, while the cost of living in Las Cruces, New Mexico is relatively low. The position is available immediately for one year, with annual renewal possible for a second year subject to satisfactory progress and for additional years depending on availability of funding. Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Doctoral degree in geography/geospatial analysis, ecology, remote sensing, data analytics or related field. Preference for candidates with experience with analysis of geospatial data, LiDAR remote sensing, computer programming, interest in learning new skills and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
