Title Postdoctoral Fellow (Surface Chemistry)
Appointment Status Non-Tenure Track
Department IU Bloomington Chemistry
Position Summary Department Information:
The Department of Chemistry consists of a well-rounded research community with cutting-edge expertise in a wide variety of modern disciplines including analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, and biochemistry.
Job Summary:
Prof. Steven Tait in the Department of Chemistry at Indiana University – Bloomington is accepting applications for a postdoctoral research position. The position offers an opportunity to work on an interdisciplinary project that examines the formation of single atom catalysts on model surfaces.
Our group has interest in molecular self-assembly at surfaces, metal-organic complexation at surfaces, and the development of single atom catalysts on high surface area supports using a metal-ligand coordination strategy. This position is primarily aimed at examining strategies for stabilizing metal-ligand complexes relevant to catalysis on model surfaces, which will include metal and oxide surfaces. These surface science experiments will be conducted in a multi-chamber ultra-high vacuum system with capability for in situ deposition of metals and ligands, covalent organic framework formation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and non-contact atomic force microscopy. We also have a scanning tunneling microscope that operates in ambient or liquid environments. Our group regularly uses shared resources on our campus relevant to this project that include a state-of-the-art electron microscopy center and other chemical characterization tools. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with others in our group that work on high surface area catalyst supports, as well as with collaborators at other institutions. The overall goal of these experiments is to develop a molecular-level understanding of surface functionalization, surface treatment, and assembly strategies for developing single atom catalysts with high loading, activity, selectivity, and stability.
Applicants will emerge with a skill set that is relevant to academia and industry. This position will allow for development and training in metal-organic chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, and surface science, which will provide a strong foundation for future career development in each of these fields and in other interdisciplinary sciences. Trainees will receive regular guidance to ensure progress is made toward their career goals, regardless of whether trainees are pursuant of traditional or alternative careers. Trainees are also afforded the scheduling flexibility needed to maintain an appropriate work life balance. The trainee will be involved in experiment design and planning, supervision of graduate students, synthesis, and characterization.
Basic Qualifications Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, or chemical engineering at time of appointment (or related discipline, if applicable).
Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in surface science, especially work on ultra-high vacuum systems with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and/or scanning tunneling or atomic force microscopy. Consideration will also be given to candidates with prior research experience in other areas of surface chemistry, metal-organic chemistry, ligand synthesis, or heterogeneous catalysis. Applicants are not expected to have experience in all of these fields, but should have the ambition to develop skills in this interdisciplinary training program that bridges these fields.
