PhD student (f/m/d)

The research group of Prof. Christine Stadelmann-Nessler has an opening for a

  • Specialization: The candidate will work on a project of the initiative Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP).
  • Limitation: We are offering the position for one year with the option of extension.
  • Working period: Part-time (25,025 h/week)
  • Tariff: salary according to TV-L
  • Announcement published on 23.09.2022
  • Vacancy from 23.09.2022
  • Application deadline: 14.10.2022

The successful candidate will work on a project within the research initiative „Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s – Olfactory circuits: alpha-synuclein-rich neurons respond to environmental triggers at the origin of Parkinson’s disease” ( for more information see https://parkinsonroadmap.org/research-network/circuitry).

The research focus here will be on the glial response along the olfactory circuit, particularly in patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease (PD). Since one of the earliest symptoms of PD is olfactory dysfunction, the research on this topic will facilitate biomarker development and contribute to a better understanding of the origin of PD. Our group aims to investigate the inflammatory component along the olfactory route and corresponding changes in neuronal phenotypes. These might indicate classical pathologies such as Lewy bodies but also transcriptional changes in cellular populations.

Your responsibilities:

  • In the framework of this research, the candidate will work with human material, but experimental models of the disease are also available within the team. Of special interest will be the Göttingen Brain Bank of the de novo Parkinson’s (DeNoPa) cohort.
  • Techniques applied will be immunhistochemistry, spatial transcriptomics and in situ hybridization.
  • Further techniques available within the team include seeding aggregation assays, optogenetics and genetic screens.
  • Working visits to Canada to the research initiative collaborating group led by Prof. Michael Schlossmacher will be encouraged.

Your profile:

  • We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a master’s degree in biology, immunology, neuroscience or a related discipline.
  • Experience in cellular and molecular biology, bioinformatics, rodent models of human diseases is desirable, but not mandatory.
  • The successful candidate should have a strong interest in translational neurobiology and enjoy working in a team.

Our offer:

  • A position for one year, with the option of extension.
  • We provide a well-equipped laboratory as well as profound expertise in MS and relevant experimental models.
  • Our group has numerous national and international collaborations, and offers an intellectually stimulating environment.
