Meter Reader – 119460

Under general supervision of the Energy and Sustainability Manager, perform onsite and remote meter reading and monitor designated UC San Diego and vendor utility meters located throughout the campus, SIO, Camp Elliot, Point Loma, Hillcrest and other offsite properties. Accurately read electric, gas, water, seawater, chilled and high temperature meters in various locations (basements, mechanical rooms, electric rooms, water vaults, utility tunnels, and labs) under a variety of environmental conditions. Review remote meter data uploaded to Ion and Sensus with onsite meter data and report discrepancies. Perform routine mathematical calculations to convert meter read data from cubic feet into kilowatt hours (kWh). Enter information obtained from onsite meter reading into hand held data collection unit. Upload meter communication identification data into new meters using manufacturer program.

Provide administrative support to the Metering Work Unit. Research and report discrepancies with meter read and consumption issues to the Metering Work Unit. Coordinate with the Utilities Analyst 2 and Meter Electricians for timely repair. Assist the Utilities Analyst 2 with updating building and metering information contained within the UC San Diego Energy Cap and Maximo Work Order system. Assist with adding new meters to the UC San Diego app and Maximo Work Order system as they are installed. Update databases with campus meter, location, feed, classification and type information.

Assist vendors in locating and identifying meter locations, discrepancies and issues. Respond to incoming communications and questions with utility vendors and contractors, and review and determine appropriate contact for referral. Establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships in a diverse environment, including members of the department and campus community. Provide expeditious, professional and courteous customer service to both internal and external vendors and clients. Follow established procedures when working in confined spaces such as tunnels and water meter vaults. Maintain proficiency at current level, including annual safety certifications, and continually update knowledge through appropriate courses, seminars, publications and contact with others in the trade. Maintain an acceptable attendance and punctuality record and meet deadlines.

  • May work overtime, alternate shifts or call-back hours as determined by the University’s needs.
  • Demonstrated experience providing administrative services and clerical support to an operational unit and/or administrator.

  • Demonstrated experience working with utility meters and metering systems. Demonstrated experience reading meters and calculating utility usage.

  • Proven experience with programs and software that relate to meter data reading and retrieval. Experience importing and exporting data from internal and external systems and working with new and updated hardware and software due to continual technological advances within the field.

  • Demonstrated experience extracting accurate and useful information from computerized databases and other sources, conducting analyses and generating spreadsheets and reports.

  • Proven ability to perform routine mathematical calculations such as multiplication and simple and weighted averages. Knowledge of the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow basic technical manufacturer guidelines, for example ION and Sensus.

  • Demonstrated experience using standard computer systems and applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), database management programs, web based applications, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) such as Maximo, and financial systems such as Oracle Financial Cloud and Compass.

  • Strong problem solving skills with the ability to evaluate situations, identify existing or potential problems, and recommend solutions.

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills with demonstrated experience setting priorities and meeting deadlines in a demanding, multi-faceted environment while maintaining a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to communicate ideas and issues clearly, concisely and accurately. Ability to proofread work insuring accuracy of grammar, punctuation and spelling.

  • Excellent customer service skills. Ability to professionally interact with UC San Diego customers, contractors and vendors. Ability to build and maintain customer relationships through a professional approach in handling customer service needs and problems.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively work individually or in teams, and ability to communicate effectively with people of many diverse backgrounds including students, staff, faculty, and customers. Ability to effectively work with co-workers and customers to accomplish work with a high level of quality and efficiency.

  • DOJ, FBI, and DMV background checks and clearances required prior to employment.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.

  • Must be able to occasionally work at heights up to 25 feet using ladders.

  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and move through limited access spaces such as tunnels and water meter vaults.

  • Must be able to cover distances on foot to widely separated work sites and walk for extended periods of time.
