Job Description Summary

The Penn Opportunity for Health Lab (OHL) and the Penn Urban Health Lab (UHL) Project Manager A is a unique opportunity to help lead two large research studies at Penn Medicine that are designed to dismantle structural racism.
Responsible for day to day management of complex projects conducted with collaborators both internal and external to university. Take leadership role in developing study protocols, writing grants, managing the detailed operations of projects, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, cultivating close relationships with community partner organizations, and drafting/editing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journal. Develop the team’s research strategy, lead projects and co-author papers.

Job Description

The Penn Opportunity for Health Lab (OHL) and the Penn Urban Health Lab (UHL) Project Manager A is a unique opportunity to help lead two large research studies at Penn Medicine that are designed to dismantle structural racism.  The Project Manager A will work closely with UHL Project Manager Abby Dolan, as well as the Opportunity for Health Lab Director, Dr. Atheendar Venkataramani, Urban Health Lab Faculty Director Dr. Eugenia South, and Dr. Aditi Vasan.

Job Responsibilities

The Manager Research Project A will work closely on:

• IGNITE, an NIH funded randomized controlled trial designed to improve health among Black Philadelphians through neighborhood vacant lot cleaning, abandoned house remediation, tree planting, trash pickup, tax preparation, financial counseling, micro grants, and maximizing public benefits.

• IGNITE Kids which will examine health and well-being outcomes for children ages 5-15 living in households and neighborhoods that receive the IGNITE interventions.

• Various other projects within the Opportunity for Health Lab and the Urban Health Lab.

For IGNITE, the PM-A will work with PM Abby Dolan to co-manage the study, with research and administrative duties including:

• Oversee regulatory aspects of the study including with the Penn IRB and with the NIH.

• Managing partner relationships, including Clarifi, Campaign for Working Families, Benefits Data Trust, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and the City of Philadelphia.

• Ongoing quality improvement for overall study to ensure fidelity in data collection and intervention execution.

• Manage and oversee some of the community coordinator team.

• Aid in the development of the end of study qualitative interview

• Assist with manuscript development, translation and dissemination activities, assist with grant applications, budget development and management of study finances, and will assist with preparing work for presentations at national meetings.

For IGNITE Kids, the PM-A will work closely with Dr. Aditi Vasan to:

• Oversee study implementation for IGNITE Kids, including administrative and regulatory aspects, data collection and management, and supervising staff collecting data.

• Create and manage study databases.

• Manage communications with study participants.

• Field calls/emails from interested community members.

• Conduct periodic QI checks of study databases.

• Coordinate meetings with internal and external partners.

• Coordinate across IGNITE Kids and IGNITE to ensure seemly study execution for these related but separate studies.

• Oversee part-time community coordinator data collection team (including but not limited to scheduling hours for enrollment, maintaining study documents and preparing materials for enrollment, overseeing enrollment and follow up progress, paying participants).

The ideal candidate (1) is passionate about the health and well-being of Black and other minoritize communities, (2) has knowledge and understanding of the regulatory and administrative mechanics of large research studies, (3) has experience coordinating large research studies, including data collection, ideally community-based studies, (4) has strong social, rapport building, and oral communication skills, (5) has demonstrated strong organization and managerial skills.

The Opportunity for Health Lab seeks to understand how the American Dream affects health and identifies ways to eliminate health disparities by improving economic opportunities.  The Penn Urban Health Lab (UHL) is dedicated to designing and testing individual and community level interventions to build healthy neighborhoods.  The UHL has a focus in urban nature, blight remediation, violence prevention, and structural racism that has impacted Black and Brown communities.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree with 3-5 years of research experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
