Job Summary

As a member of RIT Housing staff, under the direct supervision the Assistant Director of Housing Facilities, the Facilities Mechanic  will oversee corrective maintenance of mechanical, building, plumbing, architectural and similar systems throughout RIT apartment housing areas.  The Facilities Mechanic will also assist and ensure custodial services/grounds are completed within the assigned complex.

Please note: Must be able to work a flexible schedule; including nights, weekends, holidays and during Institute emergencies as needed.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide skilled trades maintenance in the areas of plumbing, electrical, painting, appliance repair, carpentry, drywall and finishing, roofing, masonry, door and window repair/replacement and other facilities related items as assigned.
  • Respond to service calls from apartment residents or projects as assigned by the supervisor, and make the appropriate corrective action.
  • Manage all aspects of assigned projects through to completion.
  • Complete inspections of apartment/suite spaces as residents move out and compile work assessments to restore apartment to an “out & clean” status.
  • Comply with OSHA, NYS Building Codes, EPA and DEC requirements and maintain required records.
  • Participate in after-hours maintenance response rotation.
  • Perform duties in all aspects of routine and restorative tasks of cleaning such as: trash removal, resetting furniture, window cleaning, floor refinishing, and operation of automatic cleaning equipment for hard floors and carpeting as needed.
  • Follow through to completion ongoing preventative maintenance tasks as assigned by the Assistant Director of Facilities.
  • Complete assigned paperwork, computer/tablet work related to daily maintenance service calls, routine inspections, etc.
  • Be prepared to assist with grounds related tasks as needed within the assigned immediate area.
  • Be prepared to assist with custodial related tasks as needed within the assigned immediate area.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-5 yrs of direct mechanic experience or related experience
  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with a strong focus on customer service.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

PLEASE NOTE: The individual hired for this position will be required to have a pre-employment Motor Vehicle check, and the Motor Vehicle Report must clear

Preferred Qualifications

Trade certification, apprenticeship, or trade license preferred.
