Our research is organised around themes of Culture, History, Language, and Environment across the disciplines of Anthropology; Archaeology and Natural History; Gender, Media and Cultural Studies; Languages; Linguistics; and History.

The key disciplines that are represented in the School are anthropology, archaeology, cultural studies, gender studies, history, linguistics, and languages, all contributing to the foundational knowledge of Asia and the Pacific.

The Opportunity
Being one of the largest language programs at the ANU, the Chinese language program boasts a comprehensive range of modern Chinese language (Putonghua) courses for zero-starters to near-native speakers. The Cantonese courses offer a rare and unique opportunity for students to access one of the main Chinese dialects spoken by people in the Guangdong province, Hong Kong, and the Cantonese diaspora in the Southeast Asia and many parts of the world. A range of content-oriented courses at the advanced and upper advanced levels are also on offer so as to equip students with knowledge on Chinese history, literature, politics,international relations, literary Chinese as well as skills in interpreting and translation. Sitting within this rich language and studies program, the modern Chinese (Putonghua) and Cantonese language programs are committed to the provision of well-rounded and whole-person education for the students and strive for excellence in teaching, learning, scholarship and community engagement.
The School of Culture, History and Language invites applications for a full-time appointment as Lecturer in Cantonese and Chinese (Putonghua) language education. The appointment is sitting across the Chinese and the less commonly taught language programs, and responds to the convenor of the modern Chinese language program.
The Chinese language program, one of the largest language programs at the ANU, boasts a comprehensive range of Chinese language courses from zero-starters to near-native speakers. In addition to conventional language-centred courses at the beginning and intermediate levels, we offer a range of content-oriented courses at the advanced and upper advanced levels, including history, politics and international relations, translation, interpreting and literature.
The CIW centre at ANU is Australia’s largest network of distinguished and emerging scholars with professional expertise on China. The selected candidate is encouraged to be part of this unique community of Chinese studies.
Our Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be deeply committed to enhancing Cantonese and Mandarin language and Chinese studies at the ANU through teaching, community outreach, and program building. We seek a scholar and educator who will bring expertise and intellectual distinction to our research and education profile, and will have an active research and publication agenda in an area related to Cantonese language and Chinese studies.
The appointee will contribute to the School’s teaching programs in both Cantonese and Mandarin Language and in their area of specialisation at all levels (Undergraduate, Honours, MA and PhD), and will recruit and supervise Honours, MA and PhD students. An interest in learning technologies and innovative approaches to teaching is desirable. The appointee should be active in professional service within ANU, and both nationally and internationally in their relevant disciplines, as well as in the broader community.
