The successful candidate will work alongside the IT leadership team in the provision of IT support and systems administration support throughout the Department. You will be required to be flexible and must be able to operate at many levels, including the ability to support users, and to assist users in the installation and maintenance of software. The ability to communicate effectively with users at all levels in an academic environment is essential. The post is designed to support the development of the postholder’s systems administration skills and would be ideal for someone wishing to make the transition from front-line support towards managing larger systems.
You will be expected to work as part of a cohesive team, and to provide front line support to all users as well as supporting the systems administrators, and be expected to have strong technical, documentation and troubleshooting skills, as well as being quick to learn new technologies. You will approximately 45% of their time staffing the department’s IT helpdesk, triaging technical queries for IT support on all aspects of IT within the department. You will ensure that requests for support are dealt with in a timely manner, including escalating queries, working with the other staff to identify major incidents, and taking responsibility for handling communications in the event of such an incident occurring during their duty shift. Other duties include supporting systems administration tasks. Support will be provided to enable development of skills involving key technologies we use, including Windows Server, Hyper-V, Linux as well as systems management (Ansible) and containerisation systems (Docker). The commitment to supporting the use of IT in support of teaching and research is a must.
You will have a degree in any subject, or relevant IT qualifications and experience. You will have significant Windows desktop experience including in a domain environment and demonstrable experience of providing frontline IT support, ideally to users in a higher education environment. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to interact with a wide range of people both within the Department and outside, and to act as an ambassador to prospective and current students is essential. You will have experience in hardware and software troubleshooting and of working with AV equipment.
