Position Focus:
The IACUC Coordinator establishes and proactively maintains a close working relationship with Principal Investigators and their staff. Assists investigators in the IACUC-associated activities, advises investigators on maintaining animal care and use compliance. Will be readily accessible and available to assist investigators with questions/concerns as they arise independently from the protocol/modification/renewal and assessment processes such as training, medical clearance, and facility access—including quality assurance of those activities. Additional duties include helping to prepare for and attending IACUC meetings (navigating review of documents and protocol submissions, recording decisions, and generating minutes), assisting with training for new IACUC members, maintaining office standard operating procedures, and managing interoffice webinars on animal welfare and research-related topics. Will conduct congruency reviews to ensure investigators’ use of animals is consistent with the corresponding grant proposals. Serves as a liaison between the Office of Sponsored Projects, investigators, business managers and the Yale Animal Resource Center to resolve interoffice requests in a timely manner.
Essential Duties
1. Assumes primary responsibility for a program, service, activity, operation or function in an assigned area. Develops objectives, practice and procedure and identifies resources to ensure accomplishment of operational goals. 2. Coordinates day-to-day operations in order to achieve designated goals. Ensures effective management and leads the development and implementation of best practices. 3. Designs and implements quality control metrics to identify areas of risk. Analyzes, recommends, and implements strategic solutions to minimize risk. 4. Develops a variety of complex report and other written materials. 5. Provides guidance to and collaboration with internal and external partners as necessary. 6. Develops, oversees and monitors budgets. 7. Develops and maintains specialized training. 8. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Strong commitment to the welfare of animals used in research. Ability to work productively with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Effective communication skills, including written, verbal, and presentation skills, and the ability to overcome language barriers. Strong organizational skills, including priority setting, time management, planning and follow-up, and attention to detail.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Strong interpersonal skills, including teamwork, customer service oriented, motivational, negotiating skills, professional demeanor, and ability to overcome adversarial interactions in a firm but diplomatic manner.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in animal science, education, or related disciplines or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Four-five years’ experience with animals used in laboratories or regulatory compliance oversight. Working knowledge in regulations, policies, and nationally accepted standards regarding the care and use of animals in research, testing, and training.
Required Licenses or Certifications
Certification for Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) desirable or attainment of certification within one year of eligibility.
