Department Summary This position is grant funded through September 30, 2027, contingent on annual grant funding by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA). Continuation of the position beyond that date is contingent upon available funding.
Position Summary This grant is focused to provide Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training to a large audience of individuals so that they can recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness and identify resources available in the community.
The Graduate Student Assistant, under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), will be responsible for providing support to the PI and Co-PI’s research program, including the day-to-day operations of the project and other relevant tasks.
  • Plan, develop, and promote mental health outreach activities on campus and in surrounding communities.
  • Identify potential participants, schedule enrollment activities, obtain consent, administer project tasks, and ensure participant retention.
  • Assist with the creation of program materials and program evaluation.
  • Assist with data collection.
  • Manage social media sites.
  • Facilitate informational meetings, programs, and functions on campus and within the surrounding community related to mental health issues.
  • Responsible for promoting community awareness concerning the issues of mental health.
  • Identify and collaborate with community groups, partners, and stakeholders to support the project goals and activities.
  • Other duties as assigned by the PI and Co-PI.
  • Organize and host outreach and tabling events.
  • Assist in data collection.
  • Manage social media platforms.

Minimum Qualifications Currently enrolled UNT Dallas, UNT Dallas College of Law, HSC or UNT student in good standing and making satisfactory progress toward completion graduate degree program. Applicants must possess the following:
  • Excellent customer service skills, as well as effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office computer applications (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Thorough knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete tasks independently.
  • Proficiency to keep complex records, to assemble and organize data, and to prepare reports from such records.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Responsible, reliable and punctual.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work of others.
  • Considerable knowledge of academic requirements and policies, or of administrative procedures relative to the area of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Candidates with a bachelor degree in sociology, social work, public health, psychology, education, or other relevant fields.
  • Experience working in a mental health program.
  • Bilingual (with oral and written skills in Spanish and English) is a highly preferred skill for the position.
