Geology Lab Teaching Specialist – Lecturer

Department of Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science

The Department of Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science (BGE) at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) seeks applications for a Lab Teaching Specialist position in Geology beginning August 1, 2023.

We invite applications for a 9-month non-tenure-track faculty position at the Lecturer level. Candidates must hold a M.S. in Geology/Earth Science or closely related discipline. Teaching experience is strongly preferred. Responsibilities include teaching multiple sections of various undergraduate laboratory courses in geology, developing curriculum for the laboratory courses, serving on appropriate departmental committees and participating in departmental faculty meetings, and providing outreach to the community. The courses the applicant would be expected to teach include but are not limited to Physical Geology Laboratory, Earth and the Environment Laboratory, and Historical Geology Laboratory.  Candidates should also be willing to engage in a variety of instructional modalities, including online instruction, and in assisting the UTC campus in its ability to reach additional goals as specified in UTC’s Strategic Plan.

Required qualifications include:

  • M.S. in Geology/Earth Science or closely related discipline
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence
  • Demonstrated potential for effective integration of technology into instruction
  • Ability to coordinate and teach multiple sections of assigned laboratory courses
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated potential for commitment to the mission of the university to actively engage students, embrace diversity and inclusion, inspire positive change, and enrich and sustain our community
  • Potential to work collaboratively and cooperatively with faculty and staff within the department, college, and university

Application Procedures:

  • A cover letter addressing qualifications for the position.
  • An updated curriculum vitae, including contact information (email, phone, etc.)
  • Statement of teaching experience and philosophy
  • Diversity statement detailing the applicant’s value of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), including the candidate’s previous contributions to DEI and a vision for future activities
  • Unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
  • Names, titles, and email addresses for three (3) references, from which UTC will request confidential letters of recommendation. At least one of these references must be able to comment on teaching ability.

BGE has 36 full-time faculty with more than 850 majors distributed between B.S. Biology, B.S. Geology, B.S. Environmental Science, and M.S. Environmental Science degrees.
