Job Summary

Opening in fall 2023, the Student Hall for Exploration and Development (the SHED) is the most ambitious construction project undertaken since the Henrietta campus was created in 1968. More than just a building, the SHED will be an impressive demonstration of the RIT experience. The SHED is designed to centralize the university’s makerspace and performing arts, embodying RIT’s focus on technology, the arts, and design.

With the vast number of stakeholders, activities, courses, and co-curricular opportunities being discussed and planned for the SHED, the Executive Director of the SHED will be a vital position in ensuring a coordinated and efficient approach is taken in managing this new collaborative and innovative space in the heart of campus.
The Executive Director will be primarily responsible for day to day building operations as well as planning, developing, and implementing strategic, tactical, and/or operational plans and activities that align with the overall vision, mission, and strategy for the SHED facility.
This position will report to the Provost’s Office and will ensure that the building is running at peak capacity as well as coordinate day to day activities in SHED spaces across various space stakeholders, including:

  • Operations Director of CLA Performing Arts
  • Technical Director of NTID Performing Arts
  • SHED Makerspace Director

The SHED Executive Director will oversee SHED operational staff and coordinate technical production/event setup ensuring needs are met and that events run smoothly in the other multipurpose and shared spaces within the facility including, but not limited to HUB/atrium where pop-up performances, speakers, meetings, conferences, etc.

Job Responsibilities

  • Works in conjunction with Operations Director of Performing Arts, NTID Performing Arts Technical Director, and Makerspace Director to ensure all facilities are managed and maintained in a coordinated, efficient, and organized manner.
  • Schedules the non-performance based SHED facilities including the HUB, and ensures proper staffing in place for events during the evenings and weekends.
  • Works with Operations Director of Performing Arts and NTID Performing Arts Technical Director to ensure the appropriate and safe working condition of the performing arts facilities within the SHED including the Glass Box Theater, Music Rehearsal Room, Dance Studio, and A-Level practice rooms.
  • Serves as a point person for all facilities, safety and emergency, immediate/non-immediate requests pertaining to the physical plant of the SHED.
  • Develops and communicates new policies surrounding the proper usage and operating policies of the SHED spaces to all partners internally and externally, including those in the adjoining Wallace Center and Monroe Hall buildings.
  • Works with Operations Directors and Leadership across campus to coordinate schedule for Institute-level events, such as Commencement, Brick City Weekend, Imagine RIT, as well as events and special use of SHED facilities by other campus partners and other stakeholders. Coordinates with CLA/NTID to ensure there is no conflict with scheduling.
  • Accountable for operational and/or financial resources. Serve as a strategic advisor to executive and senior level managerial staff with authority to independently commit the organization to mission critical projects/programs/services/products or develops budgets and monitor expenditures.
  • Accountable for legal and policy compliance in managed work unit; manages risk.
  • Plans maintenance work.
  • Ensures compliance with health and safety legislation and requirements.
  • Influences business decisions made by university leadership.
  • Participates in the SHED steering committee meetings, providing communication and updates.
  • Manages operational staff, including recruitment, hiring, training, and development.
  • Sets individual objectives, prioritizes work assignments, ensures quality of work, monitors performance, and conducts appraisals.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Facilities Management or related field.  Will consider equivalent experience. 
  • 3+ years managing operational budget and maintaining financial records for a large facility.
  • 3+ years project/program management with history of delivering projects on time.
  • 5+ years staff management, including recruitment, coaching and professional development to individuals/team as well as overseeing day to day operations and work scheduling, prioritizing tasks, and standardized process development. 
  • 5+ years proven success in establishing, operationalizing, leading, and managing the execution of processes and tactics as relates to facility operations.
  • 5+ years facility operations management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing a multi-purpose, multi-venue facility.
  • Experience managing a Performing Arts Building.
  • Experience working in higher education.
