The Post

The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Manager will join a vibrant and expanding team at the heart of the University and will have the opportunity to lead our next steps to achieve the ambitions set out in our institutional strategy and associated EDI strategy and policy framework. 

The postholder will proactively lead the development and implementation of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion related strategies, policies and projects to influence a mainstream culture of equity and inclusiveness throughout all practices and functions. The EDI Manager will have extensive knowledge of the relevant equalities and human rights legislation, including application of the Equality Act and associated Public Sector Equality Duties within Higher Education or similar regulated sector/organisation.

The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to establish themselves as an influential and credible professional source of EDI knowledge and expertise across the institution. As such, they must have the ability to develop effective working partnerships across the institution, and to achieve buy in and shared ownership for change.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a highly collaborative team, in a new role, reporting to the Head of Policy and Planning and working closely with senior colleagues including the Senior Deputy Principal and the Institutional Dean of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.  

Description of Duties

  • Lead on and contribute to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives, projects and policy work to further promote and progress equity diversity and inclusion
  • Develop and enhance the University’s approach to equality diversity and inclusion, to meet legislative and good practice guidelines; including the Equality Act 2010/Public Sector Equality Duties and other legislation related to aspects of the EDI agenda
  • Identify sectoral good practice in relation to EDI and facilitate the sharing of this practice through institutional EDI networks
  • Provide high quality professional advice on current and emerging policy issues relating to equality, diversity and inclusion to staff including senior management, horizon scan for future developments in the EDI arena and brief senior colleagues accordingly
  • Provide high quality information, advice and guidance on all staff and students equality, diversity and inclusion matters, including equality impact assessments and the interpretation of EDI data and issues relating to EDI policy and practice
  • Manage, support and act as Secretary to University’s EDI committees and steering groups as required, including the preparation of high-quality committee papers, discussion documents and reports; analyse and interpret of data sets working in partnership with colleagues from across the institution
  • Develop and implement proposals, papers and briefings for senior managers, governance committees and steering groups
  • Lead on the preparation of statutory reports on delivery of our Equality Outcomes/monitoring duties and EDI Strategy objectives
  • Leading the preparation of submissions to accreditation schemes or Charters such as Athena SWAN etc.
  • Champion an organisational culture that values equality, diversity and inclusion as a core institutional value, in all dealings staff have with colleagues, customers, and partners
  • Work closely with student representatives and EDI leads/champions across academic areas and professional services to drive progress collaboratively, including gathering and utilising lived experience to foster change
  • Develop a programme of activities and projects to meet our objectives and EDI commitments

Essential Criteria

  • A degree level education or equivalent through relevant training/ experience
  • Professional experience of working in an EDI role in a complex organisation providing advice and direction to senior managers
  • Demonstrable experience of developing EDI policy, strategies/plans and delivering EDI initiatives aimed at achieving positive culture change
  • Proven ability to think strategically, to prioritise effectively and to balance a demanding and varied workload
  • Extensive and in-depth knowledge of relevant equalities and human rights legislation, including the application of the Equality Act 2010 and Public Sector Equality Duty within Higher Education or a similar regulated sector/organisation
  • Experience of interpreting legislation and applying it in a complex organisational context
  • Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion including a critical understanding of relevant principles, guidance and theory
  • Experience of advancing equity in collaboration with a wide range of colleagues, networks, and stakeholders
  • Experience of working effectively as part of multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of developing evidence-based initiatives in response to trends and patterns of inequity
  • Exceptional written communication, interpersonal and analytical skills, including the ability to explain complex information quickly and accurately to a range of audiences, including senior managers
  • The ability to present a persuasive and influential position, utilising qualitative and qualitative data and evidence
  • Excellent IT skills including the ability to work with a variety of systems
  • Excellent organisational ability, with the ability to project manage a range of initiatives and developments simultaneously
  • Ability to network and build meaningful relationships with senior colleagues, both within and outside the University, and to maintain strong working partnerships

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Excellent knowledge of the higher education sector and the external political factors which impact upon the sector
  • Experience of working in a higher education policy or planning setting
  • Experience and understanding of interculturalism and working with diverse populations

    Policy & Planning is one of the divisions within Student, Academic and Corporate Services (SACS) and provides a range of services including developing and co-ordinating University policies and strategic projects, overseeing the management of the University’s governance structures, supporting the University’s league table performance and institutional student surveys, preparing and analysing performance information, policy development, committee support, preparing statistical returns to regulatory bodies and coordinating and monitoring the strategic planning process.
