Entrepreneurial Research Assistant, Haskayne School of Business

Position Overview

The Haskayne School of Business invites applications for a Entrepreneurial Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 4 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Entrepreneurial Researcher is responsible for data collection as part of the study team for the project titled “Assessing user experience of a Virtual Reality (VR) based visual field exam when compared to the Gold Standard Humphrey visual field exam”.  This candidate will assist and work collaboratively with senior scientists and medical professionals in a dynamic work environment.  In addition to providing research assistant duties this position involves specific entrepreneurial duties within a partner start-up business.  The research conducted as part of this position will provide further development and validation of the partner’s core technology.  As such

This position reports to the Principal Investigator (PI). Work times for this position would normally be during the regular work week (i.e., Monday to Friday) although some flexibility is needed given the nature of the research activities.

The candidate will be vital in helping and organizing clinical studies with start-up partner business. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for handling and managing other necessary tasks for ensuring successful outcome of those studies. In addition, depending on the successful applicant’s interests and project demands, duties may include:

  • drafting research proposals
  • securing ethics approval
  • data collection
  • data formatting and/or data analysis
  • case writing
  • report/paper writing
  • organizing and coordinating team meetings
  • liaising with external stakeholders
  • attending conferences/workshops
  • preparing progress reports

It may also involve coordinating activities of other researchers on the team.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Assist and support ethics application submission.
  • Assist and support writing research proposals and funding applications.
  • Take the lead in communicating with various stakeholders to make sure current and new studies are running smoothly.
  • Handle and make sure all necessary consent forms and documents are well maintained.
  • Communicate with stakeholders and make sure logistics and studies are confirmed.
  • Ensures collected data submitted is accurate.
  • Must maintain the ethical and confidentiality standards of patient records.
  • Good relationships are established and maintained with all research project members and participants.
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, and the research team, including the primary investigators.
  • Develops operating procedures and safety protocols and recommends workflow improvements when needed.
  • Trains other staff and students in the operation of equipment and protocols.
  • Provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical issues
  • Compile tables, charts, graphs, and summarized statistics to integrate in research papers and reports. This includes materials for presentation and publication

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in health science or related field combined with a business related degree is required and at least one year of industry experience.
  • At least one year of experience working with seniors.
  • Ability to map user experience to product features and identify use pinpoints.
  • Experience in writing and submitting grants and research proposals.
  • High energy and communication skills to keep all study personnel motivated and committed to the study’s success.
  • Good judgment and decision-making.
  • Ability to perform self-directed work.
  • Knowledge and experience with the University of Calgary Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board and related ethical standards.
  • Ability to work independently and also able to work with and communicate in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to solve complex problems.
  • Detail-oriented focus.
  • Superior organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong computer and data entry skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Have significant initiative, be self-motivated, and strive for personal development.
  • Be resourceful and innovative to accomplish the various components of the position.
  • The ability to represent the interests of the University of Calgary and Haskayne School of Business in a professional manner.
  • Ability to follow established procedures for research work, but also displays ability to be innovative with respect to suggesting new procedures/evaluation methods.
