Job Description

The Melikian Center for Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies is seeking a creative, organized and skilled individual to take on responsibility for marketing and communications for the Center in a team-oriented and fast-paced environment that prizes initiative, creativity, collaboration, and camaraderie.  The Outreach and Communications Coordinator is a problem solver who understands the Center’s mission and has the writing, administrative, technical and critical thinking skills necessary to maintain and enhance the Center’s reach to diverse constituencies across web, social media, email, video and print platforms. This position reports to the Associate Director of the Center and collaborates with The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences communications team to provide ongoing support for college initiatives.

Essential Duties

Under the direction of the Associate Director, this person will:

  • Manage communications to advance the regional, national, and international profile of the Center for high-quality, interdisciplinary research; cultural and language training; and reliable information and informed commentary on Russia, Eurasia and East Europe.
  • Work in collaboration with unit leadership and staff to develop and implement a communications plan that tells the Center’s story through use of marketing/brand strategy, tactics, diverse media, and key messages, and provide ongoing leadership for continuous improvement.
  • Write and edit copy for Center communications. These materials may include, but are not limited to: promotional materials (e.g. brochures, email, flyers, advertisements, direct mail pieces, videos/video scripts, annual reports); outreach sections for grant proposals, publications and reports, to US Department of Education and other funders; press releases, feature articles, video stories, newsletters, web pages and web-based communications.
  • Oversee the Center’s websites and social media accounts and act as overall web/social media editor to include: ensuring maintenance of university and unit standards, accuracy of information, and site functionality; identifying information needs and developing content to fill these; ensuring timely posting of news and events; initiating and completing routine site updates; liaising with college and university website administrators; troubleshooting existing or potential problems; and ensuring continuous flow of content and improvement of the Center’s e-strategies across all platforms.
  • In coordination with the Center leadership and ASU media relations team, develop and distribute local, regional, and national media releases and pitch story ideas, including promoting the work of Center faculty and faculty affiliates.
  • Collaborate with Events Coordinator to ensure smooth and effective communications and coordination between online and in person content.
  • Develop and manage a system for tracking and evaluating the effectiveness of outreach efforts by the Center and recommending improvements and changes as necessary.
  • Serve as liaison to The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and ASU Foundation marketing and communication teams.
  • Provide ongoing communications and marketing support to broader college initiatives (e.g. Humanities Week). Collaborate with Center Leadership and the Director of Marketing and Communications for The College to support multi-channel communication campaigns for audiences including donors, alumni, parents and families, and current and incoming students.
  • Work within defined budget parameters and assist in the annual budgeting process.
  • Present information about the Center and its programs—especially the Critical Languages Institute– to visitors using a variety of presentation formats, including oral presentations/tours.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Evidence of interest in the languages, cultures and politics of Russia, Eurasia and East Europe

  • Evidence of working with an interdisciplinary team of communication and marketing, subject matter, and technology professionals in strategic communication and digital outreach.

  • Experience in managing and prioritizing multiple tasks and deadlines, and working collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment.

  • Evidence of effective communication skills, including knowledge of publication format and editorial practices, including writing for print, broadcast, and electronic mediums.

  • Ability to comprehend and accurately communicate complex subject matter to various constituencies and the general public.

  • Experience in web design, social media content creation, and social technology administration.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of media relations, particularly in an academic environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of software and applications related to marketing and communications, such as: Salesforce for customer relationship management, Teamwork for project management, Microsoft Office Applications (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook), Google Applications, Adobe Creative Cloud Applications (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign), web publishing software packages such as Drupal, etc.

  • Experience maintaining positive working relationships across a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); frequently required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (25%); frequently required to travel to off-campus meetings and programs (25%).
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

Department Statement

Established as a consortium in 1984, The Melikian Center for Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies advances innovative use-inspired research and teaching on the languages, societies and geopolitics of greater Eurasia.  The Center’s core mission is to enhance contextual expertise and cultural awareness in the communities it serves, through partnerships across disciplinary, ideological and geographical borders. In 2022, the Melikian Center was named as a National Resource Center for Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies, with support extending through to 2026, including Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for students attending the Critical Languages Institute (CLI).
Established in 1991, the CLI offers intensive training every summer in less commonly taught East European and Eurasian languages. Students from diverse backgrounds and career paths take 8-13 ASU credits over 7-11 weeks, in courses taught by highly-qualified instructors, many of whom hold academic year positions at other institutions.  The CLI currently enrolls approximately 150 students each summer, of whom approximately half study overseas. In summer 2022 CLI languages were Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Hebrew, Indonesian, Kazakh, Macedonian, Persian, Polish, Russian, Tatar, Turkish, Ukrainian and Uzbek.
