Position Details

General Statement Reporting to the Vice President of Student Success and working as a member of the VP’s executive team, the Director of Veteran Services directs and coordinates the provision of supportive services for students who are veterans, dependents of veterans, and those students using VA educational benefits. This position establishes practices and protocols regarding the delivery of these services; ensures access to programs and facilities at MSU-Bozeman; increases campus awareness of veterans and veteran services; and serves these students as an advocate and mentor.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee strategic direction and programming of Veteran Support Center, encouraging the admissions and retention of veterans.
  • Provide both academic and personal advisement to students who are veterans.
  • Provide advocacy for students who are veterans with faculty, administrators, local community, and appropriate parties.
  • Verify student eligibility for veteran educational benefits.
  • Certify all paperwork to the Department of Veteran Affairs for educational benefits, and monitor academic progress of veterans, per federal regulations.
  • Be knowledgeable on laws and government mandates that impact veterans; ensure compliance with Federal, State, MSU, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and local laws, regulations, and practices.
  • Manage and monitor a variety of state and foundation budgets, seek out grant and research opportunities, and cultivate and foster relationships with donors.
  • Serve as a resource and/or provide training to staff, faculty, other MUS campuses and the local community regarding the needs of student veterans.
  • Attend appropriate campus, community and statewide meetings, conferences, and training sessions.
  • In consultation with the VPSS, maintain relationships with city, state, and federal representatives and offer advice on topics related to student veterans.
  • Gather data for program planning, evaluation, and reporting purposes.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Demonstrated experience working with veterans and/or military connected people.
  • Demonstrated experience in budgeting, resource management, and personnel supervision
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Master’s Degree.
  • Knowledge of Veteran Affairs and certification process for veterans.
  • Knowledge of veteran issues.
  • Knowledge and experience working with students.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.
  • The Successful Candidate Will
    • Possess strategic planning, visioning, and ability to create new initiatives independently.
    • When possible, be present at various community veteran functions, some of which can take place at night or on weekends
    • Must possess well defined writing skills.
