Job Description:

Iowa State University is currently seeking candidates for a Director Recreation Services.

Example of Duties

  • Responsible for and directs the day-to-day operations and priorities of Recreation Services including programs, services, facilities and fields, communication and marketing, and student development.

  • Leads the strategic planning, long term and short term goal setting for the department, including development of annual department scorecard. Ensures alignment with unit, division, and university plans.

  • Ensures continuous evaluation, benchmarking, and comprehensive assessment of department services, programs, facilities, personnel, safety, and risk management.

  • Provides overall leadership for departmental personnel management and partners with University Human Resource representatives to ensure collaboration and compliance with university policies and procedures.

  • Role models and fosters a culture of respect, inclusion, ownership, positivity, and innovation.

  • Provides overall leadership for departmental financial management and partners with the Division of Operations and Finance representatives to ensure collaboration and compliance with university policies and procedures.

  • In collaboration with associate directors, prepares annual budget and scorecard and provides projections and recommendations for the department. Ensures department retains a strong bond ratio in support of the overall university bond ratio.

  • Stays up to date with legal and compliance requirements that impact Recreation Services. Ensures proactive monitoring and reporting procedures are in place, are actively monitored, and trends shared with staff and university leadership.

  • Ensures departmental fiscal responsibility and oversight of student fees and other revenue streams.

  • Provides overall leadership for Recreation Services safety and risk management. This includes proactive and continuous development and oversight of departmental safety and risk management plans, and other program or facility plans.

  • Collaborates with university officials, the Office of Risk Management, and divisional leadership to proactively negate risk in all areas impacting students, employees, and the campus community.

  • Ensures Recreation Services is in compliance with all federal, state, university, division, unit, and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Serves as a positive, enthusiastic, and collaborative liaison between students, employees, departments served, University leadership, community and industry partners, and external agencies.

  • Acts as a core leader within the Student Health and Wellness unit in support of holistic wellbeing and health promoting efforts for students and the campus community. Supports collaboration and collective efforts within the Student Health and Wellness unit that includes Student Wellness, Student Counseling Services, and the Thielen Student Health Center.

This position serves at the pleasure of the university administration and is exempt from certain P&S policies.

• Develops and recommends institution policy within area of functional or operational expertise
• Scope of influence may be a function, a large sub function, or multiple sub functions
• Manages staff and sets priorities for department(s)
• Typically has sufficient staff to have multiple Managers or Supervisors as direct reports
• Has full management responsibility for direct reports, specifically the authority to hire, fire, and counsel
• Understands key drivers of financial performance for operational areas
• Provides substantial input to the budgeting process
• Responsible for budgetary decisions according to guidelines within functional area
• Recommends financial decisions that impact area of responsibility
