Job Summary:

The School of Communication and the Arts at Marist College invites applications for a Director of Academic Advising. We seek a student-centered, collaborative candidate who is up-to-date in the latest best practices in advising and promoting student success. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Communication and the Arts, the goal of this position is to foster and support holistic student academic development from first year and beyond. The Director will work with faculty, chairs, staff and students within the school, and will coordinate and liaise with the Registrar, Center for Advising and Academic Services, the Office of Accommodations and Accessibility, Athletics, Student Affairs, and the Office of International Programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Masters Degree in an appropriate field
• Three years’ experience in academic advising
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, digital, and written communication skills
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Essential Functions:

• Serves as the school coordinator of all advising efforts
• Develops and implements a new first-year advising system in the School of Communication in the Arts, and advises all first-year students in conjunction with part-time advisors
• Advises transfer students, including summer transfers, in conjunction with department/program chairs
• Provides “back up” advising to faculty members
• Performs and interprets degree audits, especially of first-year students
• Develops an annual retention report for SCA majors with identification of issues and suggestions for actions
• Serves as Study Abroad coordinator for non-Marist Italy students
  • Advise study abroad students working with chairs and faculty to get approval for courses taken at other institutions
  • Serves as liaison to LdM and other study abroad sites
• Approves “change of major” and “courses to be taken at another institution” forms in coordination with the chairs and faculty and in accordance with Marist College guidelines
• Develops advising materials and presentations to support individual and group student sessions, including advising boot camps and regular communications with students
• Collaborates with all student support units in Academic and Student Affairs for the development and continual improvement of student services

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with undergraduate students, parents, peers, faculty, and deans.
• Proficiency in various software tools such as Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with Banner, Salesforce, and web management systems
