Job Description Summary
The Communications Specialist III, under general supervision, writes, edits, and assists in the production of informational and promotional materials, presentations and marketing events.
Qualifications
Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Experience:
Four years of writing and editing experience should set the candidate up for success.
Preferred Education:
None.
Preferred Experience:
Experience in news media, public affairs and website writing.
Required Licenses and Certifications:

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to present information clearly and concisely.
Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of project management fundamentals.
Proven knowledge of current social media platforms.
Knowledge of current and emerging mobile production applications.
Job Responsibilities
60%: Research, Writing, Editing and Planning
Researches, writes and reports news for assigned topics, with special consideration to efforts directed to omni-channel utilization. Collects information and writes news releases documenting research, teaching, service, and current and former student success for distribution to media, internal and external audiences. Provides writing, editing and other content for special projects, including brochures, posters, pamphlets, magazines, and view books. Researches and analyzes industry trends and maintains knowledge of emerging technologies and creative techniques. Writes general content in collaboration with Division staff to support a multiplatform communications strategy. Supports the promotion of research activities, papers, and publications. Maintains editorial calendar for the Division. Provides writing for marketing materials, including brochures, pamphlets, magazines, digital newsletters, etc. Prepares presentations and displays.
25%: Digital and Multimedia Communications
Supports strategic and branded presences in social media. Assists in the promotion of stories with appropriate print and digital media. Supports integration of new media, including internal and external web and social media tools, to help increase visibility and awareness of the Galveston Campus. Aids in tailoring content specific to separate digital mediums.
10%: Media and Public Relations
Aids in planning and publicizing special events. Supports the Director of Marketing and Communication in responding to media inquiries. Supports Director in media appearances and assists in coordinating and presenting news conferences.
5%: Other Duties
Performs other duties as assigned.
